Keri Russell’s hair did not move. Matthew Rhys’ curls were supposed to.

Campbell pulled Russell’s hair into a sleek bun that followed the clean lines of her backless black leather Khaite gown. He gave Rhys, her partner, a looser finish that preserved his natural curl above his Thom Browne tuxedo.

Russell was nominated for outstanding lead actress in a drama series for playing diplomat Kate Wyler on Netflix’s The Diplomat. Rhys won outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for Widow’s Bay and outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie for The Beast in Me. The victories made him the first male actor to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year.

“For Keri’s look tonight we wanted to do something clean and sleek. With the sleekness of her dress we thought it would work well towards the overall look,” Campbell said.

Here is how he built both styles.

KERI’S SLEEK BUN

STEP 1: RESET THE ROOTS

The bun started at the roots, not the elastic. Campbell sprayed Root Lift through Russell’s hair, then used a Mason Pearson flat brush and Dyson hair dryer to blow it straight and backward.

The alcohol-free spray comes out as a fine mist and adds light, touchable hold at the roots. Campbell used that hold to train Russell’s hair away from her face during the blow-dry, giving every strand the same destination before he formed the ponytail.

The flat brush created the tension needed to pull the hair taut and smooth its surface as it dried.

STEP 2: LOCK IN THE SLEEKNESS

Campbell followed the same backward path with the one-inch flat iron. The Chronos holds its plates at 365 degrees and adjusts the power as the tool moves through the hair, helping it maintain consistent heat through each pass.

That mattered at the roots, where any bend or lift would interrupt the slick line running from Russell’s forehead to the bun. The narrow plates also allowed Campbell to work close to the scalp and press shorter pieces into place.

“The most important step is definitely the blow dry and flat ironing to set the root direction with the blowdry and lock in sleekness and shine with the flat iron.”

STEP 3: BUILD THE PONYTAIL

A few drops of Santa Lucia oil helped Campbell gather Russell’s hair into a tight ponytail. The lightweight oil smooths frizz, guards against humidity and adds shine without the hard finish of gel.

Campbell applied it after the heat work, so its role here was control. The oil helped the strands lie together, giving the crown an even surface before he secured the elastic.

STEP 4: THE FOUR-PUMP BUN

Campbell worked four pumps of Milk Hair Serum through the ponytail before twisting it into a bun and securing it with hairpins.

The silicone-free serum is made to detangle, soften and control frizz. On Russell’s dry ponytail, it kept the length pliable enough to twist into a compact coil and helped prevent shorter ends from breaking through the finished shape.

Its light texture also allowed Campbell to use four pumps without turning the bun stiff or greasy.

STEP 5: ERASE THE FLYAWAYS

RŌZ Evergreen Hair Styling Cream, $32

Evergreen handled the detail work. The cream provides light-to-medium hold, giving Campbell enough control to press flyaways into the style while keeping the surface smooth.

He used only a dab. The buildable texture made it easier to target fine hairs around the hairline and bun without adding another full layer of product.

Campbell finished with Parfums de Marly Valaya Hair Perfume, $97. The light mist is designed for hair and carries bergamot, mandarin and white peach into orange blossom, white flowers, musk and wood.

Campbell sprayed it on after the structure was complete, adding scent without disturbing the sleek finish.

MATTHEW’S NATURAL CURLS

“For Matthew’s hair inspiration we wanted to work with his natural texture and give it a bit of a loose feel,” Campbell said.

STEP 1: BRUSH IN THE OIL

Campbell brushed through Rhys’ hair with The Bur Bur Mermaid Brush, $58, then worked in a few drops of the botanical oil.

Growing Season is sold as a weekly pre-shampoo treatment, but a few drops can also smooth, polish and define dry hair. Its blend of plant oils gave Rhys’ curls separation and shine while allowing them to retain their loose shape.

The Mermaid Brush combines boar bristles with nylon pins. The nylon moved through Rhys’ hair while the shorter bristles distributed the oil across the strands.

STEP 2: DIFFUSE AND SHAKE

Dyson Supersonic Nural Hair Dryer, $449

Campbell attached the diffuser and dried Rhys’ hair around its natural bends. The wide attachment spreads the airflow across the curls, helping them dry in their existing pattern instead of blowing the strands apart.

He shook the finished hair out with his hands, then added another few drops of Bur Bur oil to sharpen the texture and add shine.
