Kate Garraway apologises to GMB viewers as she's taken off air after losing her voice

Good Morning Britain's Kate Garraway apologised to viewers before being taken off air after losing her voice during the live ITV show.

The broadcaster, 59, battled a hoarse throat as she delivered Monday morning's news stories, and the issue got worse as the programme went on, as anchor Susanna Reid, 55, told viewers Kate had gone home, with journalist Faye Barker stepping in.

Before reading the news, Kate said: 'I must apologise to you, I'm so sorry. I'm in absolutely no pain, I don't feel unwell, but I talked way too much last week.

'So it's a little bit like the news is being brought to you by Barry White this morning, so I hope it doesn't impede your understanding of the important stories we have.'

During the news segment, Jonathan Swain was reporting from Glasgow when he told Kate that when he returned to London, he would bring her a cough sweet to help with her throat.

After handing back to Susanna and her co-star Ed Balls, 59, the pair questioned Kate about the hoarseness of her voice.

Susanna wondered if it was down to her singing I Know Him So Well alongside Amanda Holden, 55, Paloma Faith, 45, Charlotte Church, 40, and David Olusoga, 56, as a tribute to comedian Alan Carr, 50, who won the prestigious Special Recognition Award at the National Television Awards on September 8.

And Ed jokingly wondered if Kate lost her voice because of 'excessive Saturday night karaoke', which she denied.

Kate explained: 'I was talking and singing last week! I lost my voice on Friday and Saturday night.'

She quipped: 'Aled Jones now wants to do a Christmas album with me, and I think, maybe, this is the result of that terror, I don't know.'

Kate continued: 'I know it sounds really painful to listen to - I'm sorry - but I'm actually not in pain.'

Susanna asked for advice on how to deal with a hoarse voice from weather presenter Laura Tobin, 44, who said: 'Hot water, honey and lemon.'

Kate chimed in: 'I've got that. Anything else?'

Laura replied: 'And don't talk.'

Laughing, Kate responded: 'Not in my nature, Laura!'

Later in Monday's programme, Susanna told viewers that Kate had gone home.

She said: 'As you may have noticed earlier this morning, Kate Garraway had a very hoarse voice; she was belting it out at the National Television Awards last week, and her voice has not fully recovered.

'So, we have put her on vocal rest, and Faye Barker has valiantly come to the rescue and is here with the rest of this morning's news.'

Before delivering the top stories, Faye quipped: 'Morning, amazing who you can find in a cupboard at ITN when needed!'
