Best known for his role as Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, Josh Brolin has been locked and loaded in recent years with new projects. Brolin even has a new movie out in theaters this weekend, Whalefall, the new survival thriller co-starring Austin Abrams that follows a scuba diver who finds himself trapped in an 80-foot whale with just one hour of oxygen left to escape. 2025 was also a busy year for Brolin, who opened the year by starring in one of the most successful horror films of the 2020s, Weapons, from writer/director Zach Cregger. He followed Weapons with a role in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and he also starred as Dan Killian opposite Glen Powell in The Running Man, which is now streaming on Paramount Plus.

Josh Brolin has had dozens of famous roles over the years, but one that fans have gravitated towards, especially on streaming, is Matt Graver. Brolin first played the agent in the 2015 Sicario film written by Taylor Sheridan and directed by Denis Villeneuve, and he returned to the role just three years later in Sicario: Day of the Soldado, which was also written by Sheridan but directed by Stefano Sollima. There had been whispers about a third Sicario movie for years, but fans were elated earlier this month when news broke that the original Sicario gang — Josh Brolin, Emily Blunt, and Benicio del Toro — were reuniting for the third film to be written by Steven Knight and directed by Padraic McKinley. During a recent interview with THR to speak about his new project, Whalefall, Brolin dropped a huge update on Sicario 3, teasing the “undeniable” prowess of Knight’s script:

“We were always looking at scripts. We always wanted to do it. We didn’t intend to wait this long, but you have Benny [del Toro], Emily [Blunt] and me looking at things and reacting to filmmakers or scripts differently,” Brolin shares. “But then Steven Knight wrote a script that was incredible, and it was kind of undeniable. All of us reacted similarly. So we’re very excited about doing it. We’ll do it next year. We have a great filmmaker, Padraic McKinley, who we think is going to make a very good movie, and we’re excited.”

When Is ‘Sicario 3’ Coming to Theaters?

Although it was confirmed that Sicario 3 is officially in the works with a complete script, there’s been no word yet on when the film will be released in theaters. It’s expected that Sicario 3 will shoot next year, which leaves the most likely window of release sometime in 2028. There are fans who are skeptical that Taylor Sheridan is no longer involved in the third Sicario movie, but with Knight’s writing credits and McKinley’s directorial history, it’s clear that the franchise is in good hands.
