10 Greatest Justice League Victories In DC History

52 minutes ago 17

Since its earliest adventures, the Justice League has gathered DC’s greatest heroes to confront dangers no single hero could face alone. Superman’s strength, Batman’s strategic mind and the abilities of their fellow members give the team a formidable range of options. Their toughest opponents, however, have repeatedly pushed those strengths to their limits.

Even when facing seemingly impossible odds, they often prevail through cooperation, sacrifice, and sheer strength. These victories have protected Earth, reshaped the DC Universe, and demonstrated what its greatest heroes can accomplish when they stand together. Some triumphs stand out more than others due to their immense relevance, and this piece highlights the most impressive of the lot.

10 Defeating Starro the Conqueror

Starro attacks city

Starro the Conqueror made his debut in The Brave and the Bold #28, the 1960 story that also introduced the Justice League of America. The alien starfish arrived on Earth with the power to control minds, using smaller starfish as extensions of its influence while preparing humanity to unleash its nuclear arsenal.

The heroes initially tackled Starro’s smaller counterparts, which had spread across different locations, before regrouping to face the main body. They discovered a specific weakness to lime and exploited it to take care of the threat. It marked the League’s first major victory and served as a landmark occasion for the team.

9 Defeating Fernus in Trial by Fire

Fernus

The Trial by Fire storyline pushed the Justice League into a crisis when Fernus, a terrifying Burning Martian presence connected to Martian Manhunter, emerged. Armed with fiery powers and formidable telepathy, Fernus overwhelmed the League and sought to spread his kind while threatening the entire world. The conflict exposed a frightening side of one of the team’s trusted members.

During the final confrontation, Plastic Man’s resistance to Fernus’ mental attacks kept the creature occupied, while Scorch absorbed his flames. The Flash saved civilians after a nuclear blast struck North Korea, and Green Lantern contained the radiation. With his teammates believing in him, J’onn broke free of Fernus’ control and finally put an end to the threat.

8 Defeating the Crime Syndicate in JLA: Earth 2

JLA Earth 2

JLA: Earth 2 sent the Justice League into an antimatter universe where the Crime Syndicate exists as their evil counterparts, ruling through fear and unchecked violence. After the heroic Alexander Luthor crosses into their world seeking help, the heroes agree to challenge Ultraman, Owlman, Superwoman, Power Ring, and Johnny Quick, whose rule has left the planet’s population accustomed to cruelty.

Their battle sees Green Lantern trap the Syndicate on the Moon, giving the League time to repair the damage and help residents imagine life without their oppressors. The victory becomes even more striking when Aquaman and Martian Manhunter later overpower the villains on the League’s Earth, showcasing a comprehensive superiority even against their alternate selves.

7 Defeating Darkseid in Justice League: Origin

In Justice League: Origin, Darkseid’s assault on Earth forced the newly assembled team to face a conqueror whose Omega Beams could devastate entire streets and whose Parademons spread chaos across cities. The heroes initially struggled to coordinate, and Superman was captured and taken to Apokolips, leaving the others to hold off the invasion while trying to bring him back.

Wonder Woman drove her sword into Darkseid’s eye, and Aquaman followed by driving his trident into the other, weakening the tyrant as the League mounted a coordinated assault. Batman freed Superman on Apokolips, and the Man of Steel returned to battle while Cyborg used the Mother Boxes to close the portals, forcing Darkseid and his army back to their world.

6 Repelling the Appellaxian Invasion

In one of the earlier Justice League stories, seven meteors carrying powerful alien beings from Appellax crashed on Earth. Each invader wielded unusual abilities, leaving Earth’s heroes to confront a series of threats across the globe. Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter responded separately before realising a united effort was necessary.

When a final confrontation forced the heroes to fight side by side, their different abilities finally proved decisive against the alien threat. Repelling the invaders protected Earth from a contest for extraterrestrial dominance, and the victory also convinced the heroes to form a permanent alliance, marking the beginning of the Justice League.

5 Defeating Lex Luthor’s Injustice Gang

During the Rock of Ages storyline, Lex Luthor assembled a formidable Injustice Gang from some of the Justice League’s deadliest enemies, including the Joker, Circe, Doctor Light, Mirror Master, and Ocean Master. Armed with the Philosopher’s Stone, Luthor orchestrated a devastating attack on Star City using false Justice League duplicates, leaving the real heroes divided and under suspicion.

Batman began dismantling the scheme from within, while Plastic Man infiltrated the Gang disguised as the Joker and exposed its supposed unity as a weakness. With Mirror Master abandoning Luthor and Jemm freed from mind control, the League recovered the Philosopher’s Stone and defeated the remaining members aboard their own satellite.

4 Exposing the White Martians in New World Order

Hyperclan from JLA comics were White MArtians in disguise

The Hyperclan were a team of White Martians who arrived on Earth and won public admiration through spectacular acts of apparent rescue. Their promise to improve humanity’s future concealed a planned invasion by the shape-shifting race. The Justice League soon faced a crisis as the impostors outmanoeuvred its members and trapped several heroes inside an ancient torture device.

After Batman survived an attack that left the others believing him dead, he uncovered the invaders’ identity and learned they feared fire. Martian Manhunter, who had secretly replaced Hyperclan member Armek, helped free the League, while Superman revealed the weakness to the world, allowing people everywhere to repel the White Martian assault.

3 Saving Earth From Mageddon in World War III

Aztek sacrificed himself to stop Mageddon

Mageddon was an ancient anti-sun weapon created by the Old Gods. It drew near Earth and stirred aggression until nations prepared for war, while ordinary citizens succumbed to rage. The League was overwhelmed, its Watchtower lay in ruins, and Superman was trapped inside Mageddon as violence spread across cities and nations worldwide.

Animal Man, whose abilities draw on animals’ life patterns, proposed accelerating human evolution so everyone could resist the weapon’s rage-inducing influence. The League’s allies activated a device to grant people temporary powers, and humanity joined the heroes’ assault, helping destroy Mageddon before Earth succumbed to global war.

2 Stopping Darkseid in Final Crisis

Darkseid in the Final Crisis Comic

In Final Crisis, Darkseid seized Earth through the Anti-Life Equation, a weapon of mental domination broadcast across global communications, enslaving much of humanity and empowering his followers to suppress resistance. With the League fractured and reality collapsing around them, the remaining heroes had to free billions of people before Darkseid’s victory consumed existence itself.

Barry and Wally led the Black Racer, a New God linked to death, to claim Darkseid’s soul. The Ray, a light-powered hero, traced a New God symbol across Earth to break Anti-Life’s hold, while Wonder Woman freed Darkseid’s host with her Lasso of Truth. Superman finally destroyed Darkseid’s remaining essence with a counter-frequency, saving the multiverse from total collapse.

1 Defeating the Anti-Monitor

DC Comics' Anti-Monitor powers up in the cosmos

During Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Anti-Monitor’s antimatter waves erased countless Earths, leaving heroes facing the multiverse’s collapse. After Supergirl and Barry Allen fell, he dragged the remaining Earth into his antimatter universe and unleashed shadow demons across the planet. While the Justice League defended civilians alongside other heroes, a strike force crossed into the antimatter realm to confront him.

The Justice League’s Superman and Wonder Woman joined with forces from other Earths in the assault, as Dr Light and Alexander Luthor weakened the Anti-Monitor. Negative Woman used her energy double to restrain the Anti-Monitor, and Darkseid blasted him into a star. Superman of Earth-Two delivered the final blow, ending the attack that threatened the last surviving Earth.
