Known as 'Cyberpunk 2077's' biggest fan, Angharad is a Welsh games writer who thrives in anything related to digital storytelling. If a video game explores the intricacies and horrors of womanhood, she is there.

Thanks to previous work at GAMINGbible, GameByte, The Loadout, Game Luster, Angharad has built a strong understanding of both the digital world and what fans want from it and is eager to share her thoughts and expertise with readers.

Since beginning its life as an anonymous post on 4chan back in May 2019, the "Backrooms" phenomenon has taken over the world. After the original user asked others to post "disquieting images that just feel off," many shared empty, yellow-tinted rooms, lit with harsh fluorescent lights and damp carpeting, but it was one reply that solidified the Backrooms phenomenon in its entirety. In a short paragraph, the user spoke about the belief that people can "no-clip" through solid walls and out of reality, ultimately finding themselves becoming trapped in the Backrooms.

Since then, the idea has grown into a cultural phenomenon with video games and even an A24 movie taking fans to their interpretation of the Backrooms. Here at Screen Rant, our very own Graeme Guttmann awarded Backrooms 7/10 stars, sharing:

There are plenty of nods to Parsons' videos, including the presence of Async, but the film really strives to examine the psychology of its characters in a way that it isn't fully equipped to do. Even when it falters, though, Backrooms is still an effective horror film, dealing in quiet terror over abject horror. In a world where fear is constantly thrown in our faces, having to look for it, and wanting to do so in the first place, can be just as disturbing.

By now, you would think that the concept had been milked dry by now, but apparently not, as one upcoming release is set to take us back to that mysterious liminal space once more.

The title in question is Shadow of Backrooms, an upcoming co-op horror game which, as you can probably guess, takes players to a series of endless liminal rooms as they are tasked with exploring with up to four friends, solving puzzles, and most importantly, escaping entities before they become trapped forever.

Developed by Panuzi, Shadow of Backrooms is set to launch some time in 2027, but it is now available to add to your Steam wishlist, with the official game description reading: "A co-op horror game in the Backrooms?! Explore a dark world full of liminal rooms, abandoned corridors and surreal places. You will feel lost in the backrooms, wandering aimlessly through endless corridors and hoping to find a way out. But beware: you are not alone. How long can you survive? Will you find the exit - or get lost forever?"

Set to arrive in Early Access soon, this co-op horror game will feature surreal environments with each corner holding new secrets, puzzles that will be your only way of escaping, and entities that you will not want to run into. Not only that, but with more content planned at a later date, Shadow of Backrooms will be the game that keeps on giving.

Hazard class: C. Yellow walls, 90s wallpaper, a hum that never stops. (They say taste was big back then.)

You always swore these rooms were real. Everyone else called it delusion, and the more you talked, the less they listened.

Then you stopped talking.

Now you're standing in the place you've been describing all these years, and every detail matches. The wallpaper, the hum, and the feeling that something is walking right behind you.

Somewhere in these corridors lies the truth about what happened to your family. But the Backrooms don't give answers for free. Every entity here was something else once, and not everyone you meet is who they claim to be.

With both a single-player and multiplayer mode to enjoy, Shadow of Backrooms is the ultimate horror experience, and considering it was made by a solo developer, it is even more reason to add it to your wishlist and show it some support ahead of its 2027 launch.
