Jimmy Eat World frontman Jim Adkins was forced to cancel three concerts after suffering a detached retina just moments before taking to the stage.

Adkins, 50, who has fronted the band, known for hits including Sweetness and Hear You Me, since 1993, took to Instagram on Tuesday to reveal the horrifying moment he noticed a 'shadow cloud' appear in his vision before the Vans Warped Tour concert in Mexico City on Sunday.

He wrote: 'Sunday, as we were preparing to play at Warped Tour in Mexico City I noticed a shadow cloud creeping in on my vision.

'With some quick research, I knew I had to seek medical help immediately. After an exam, it was discovered that I had a detached retina and needed surgery asap.'

Adkins said that doctors had told him he would have suffered 'permanent damage' if he had not received immediate treatment.

He is now back home and recovering after surgery. The band have canceled gigs due to be held in Kentucky and Georgia this week.

'We are disappointed to be missing you. Take care of yourselves, listen to your body, and we’ll be rocking with you all again soon!' Adkins concluded.

The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for the band for comment and has yet to hear back.

A detached retina occurs when the thin lining at the back of the eye detaches from blood vessels that supply it with oxygen and nutrients – and is often marked by flashes in the eye.

Without immediate surgical or laser treatment, retinal detachment can cause permanent vision loss.

Other signs of retinal detachment include dark shadows or curtains moving across the field of vision.

Roughly 28,000 Americans suffer retinal detachment each year, which is usually caused by eye injuries, severe nearsightedness and aging.

The Emo band has a cult following, thanks to a number of hits, including The Middle, Sweetness and Bleed American.

The Arizona band first formed in 1993, with a number of its core members still playing in the group since 1995.
