Klara and the Sun has confirmed a 2026 release after several major delays. The upcoming sci-fi film is based on the bestselling 2021 novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro, and stars Jenna Ortega as the titular robot, Klara. The film adaptation was first announced in 2020, but has been subject to several major delays.
Now, during an interview with Screen Daily for his new film Fing!, which premiered at Sundance, director Taika Waititi confirmed that Klara and the Sun will be released in 2026, and that the film is finally picture locked. Read his full comments below:
[Klara and the Sun is] coming soon, this year for sure. We've just been talking with Sony about when and where, we’re thinking about festivals and stuff like that.
Directed by Oscar winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor), with a script written by Emmy winner Dahvi Waller (Mad Men) based on Kazuo Ishiguro's novel, Klara and the Sun stars Jenna Ortega as the titular robot, Klara, who is created to prevent loneliness in humans and tries to save a heartbroken family, including the sickly child, Josie.
Other than Jenna Ortega as Klara, the cast also includes six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams as Josie's mother, Mia Tharia as Josie, Emmy nominee Simon Baker (The Mentalist) as Josie's father, five-time Emmy nominee Natasha Lyonne, Steve Buscemi, Harry Greenwood, and Aran Murphy.
The film adaptation of Klara and the Sun was first announced back in 2020 when Sony Pictures acquired the rights to Kazuo Ishiguro's novel before its publication. Filming finally began in January 2024 and concluded early that year, but what has held up its release is that it spent nearly 19 months in the editing room.
Now, Klara and the Sun is finally set for a release sometime in 2026.
