In a historic battle with the Hulk, Marvel just unleashed its newest god, and it changes the lore surrounding the One Above All forever. Marvel's supreme being is an enduring mystery, and one that just became a little clearer... and a little more disturbing.
Hulk Reveals the One Above All's True Form... As a Different God?
In today's The Infernal Hulk #5 - from Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Kev Walker, Cam Smith, Matthew Wilson and Cory Petit - the One Above All descends from outside reality to confront the demonic Eldest. Having stolen Hulk's powers and consumed the Elder God Vinruviel, Eldest is trying to spread a new Age of Monsters across Earth.
However, when the Infernal Hulk fights back, the One Above All's surface level is torn away, revealing a different god - one that looks like an angelic robot. This new being reveals that it is the 'hand' of the One Above All, sent to Earth to combat the spawn of Vinruviel.
Fans were shocked when Marvel revealed the One Above All would fight the Infernal Hulk directly. Marvel's supreme being exists outside the entire multiverse and never takes a direct hand in individual realities. Now, it's revealed that rule is intact, but in an exciting new way - the One Above All can embody itself through 'servants' that channel its power.
This new angel reveals how the One Above All expresses itself physically, while also suggesting the supreme being is unable to directly manifest on Earth-616. That's likely because the One Above All is so powerful, it would incinerate any world it touched directly.
Marvel Just Changed the One Above All Forever
Over the last decade, Marvel has been demystifying the One Above All. Hulk lore's introduction of Vinruviel debuted the first character explicitly outside the One Above All's plan and control. Now, Eldest is trying to 'free' the world from the One Above All's influence, albeit by transforming all life on the planet into corrupted monstrosities.
Until now, it seemed like the One Above All didn't have limitations, but this new god confirms that Marvel's supreme being can't simply do whatever it wants. Even if it's just to avoid consequences, the One Above All has to work through agents on the physical plane, and those agents aren't omnipotent - as the Infernal Hulk proves by tearing the angelic servant to pieces.
While the new godlike being is destroyed, it's clear that it's a type of being, not just an individual - a construct of the One Above All that it uses to interact with the myriad realities of the multiverse.
While the angel leaves behind a weapon the Avengers may be able to use against the Infernal Hulk, this historic issue just changed the One Above All forever. Marvel's supreme being is no longer ineffable or all-powerful, only able to engage the new Hulk via an angelic servant who isn't powerful enough to actually save the day.
The Infernal Hulk #5 is available now from Marvel Comics.
