Developers at Avalanche Software and Warner Bros. Games have been said to be hard at work on Hogwarts Legacy 2, after the game was officially confirmed back in September 2024. Of course, this is of little surprise given the monumental success of the first title when it was released in 2023, and the plethora of fans eager for more. With the game and a new HBO show looming ever closer, the excitement surrounding a sequel is beginning to build, even though we may not have a lot of information to go on yet.
When Hogwarts Legacy 2 Is Expected To Release
No Specific Date Has Been Confirmed Yet, But There Are Hints

In 2024, Warner Bros. Games called Hogwarts Legacy 2 their "top priority," but otherwise, they haven't given us much of an idea of when to expect to be able to play. It has been revealed that there will be significant tie-ins between it and the Harry Potter HBO series, which will make its debut on Christmas Day 2026. This could mean that the game will be launching around the same time, or sometime not long thereafter, in 2027.
Furthermore, the development studio behind Hogwarts Legacy 2recently hired a new Community Manager for the game, which generally suggests that marketing will follow. Although it would be nice to assume the position has been filled because the game is nearing completion, it's more likely to match up with the same HBO series timeline, again suggesting late 2026 or 2027.
This news does give reason to hope that more information about the game, and possibly a teaser trailer, will be revealed this summer, at least. Although, sadly, that is still not a guarantee.
Hogwarts Legacy 2's Setting And Story
There Will Be A Tie-In With The HBO Series
Beyond the knowledge that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will have tie-ins to the HBO series, we currently don't know much about the game. Right now, it is not even certain what the timeline of the game will be. Though it could be a direct sequel to the first game and be set in the past, where we can learn more about Anne Sallow or other characters and dangling plot lines from the original title, it may send us decades later.
Previously, we reported on an interview with WB Interactive president David Haddad from 2025. At that time, Haddad stated that "the games team has been coordinating some of the big-picture storytelling elements in the Hogwarts Legacy sequel with the storylines that will play out in the Harry Potter HBO series coming from Warner Bros. Television."
This could point to the game taking place around the same timeframe as the Harry Potter story. Or, perhaps, the game will still be in the past but serve to set up some of the features that will be seen or referenced in the HBO series. Either way, it is clear that the setting will still be in Hogwarts Castle and the surrounding areas.
Gameplay To Expect In Hogwarts Legacy 2
Features Expected And Desired By Fans
Hogwarts Legacy was already a beautifully crafted game with detailed environments and smooth gameplay that caught the attention of many. Now, with Hogwarts Legacy 2 being made years later, as technology continues to adapt and improve, it is likely that while the basic gameplay will be similar, there will be updates. Whether the HUD or controls are different is yet to be seen, though some players are hoping that flying mounts will feature better accessibility options to alleviate motion sickness.
Additionally, there are many gameplay features that fans hope will be added to the sequel, which were woefully lacking in the original Hogwarts Legacy. These include items like better NPC relationship systems, a morality meter, the ability to attend classes, and more. Even the ability to deepen the RPG elements and learn new spells would help improve the title.
Where Will We Be Able To Play Hogwarts Legacy 2?
What Consoles Will Run The Game
Due to the advanced graphics and technical details of Hogwarts Legacy, there were many problems that developers faced when attempting to port the game over to the Nintendo Switch. Now, the Nintendo Switch 2 can provide a better platform, but with Hogwarts Legacy 2 also likely to be even more impressive than the first, the same problems may be seen again on Nintendo.
The platforms that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will launch on will be largely determined by when the game does finally launch, as PlayStation and Xbox are both currently working on the next generation of consoles. If the above predictions of when Hogwarts Legacy 2 will release are close to being accurate, then we will most likely see the game on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC at least, and possibly the Nintendo Switch 2.
