Ben Brosofsky has been writing for Screen Rant since 2022 and editing since 2024. He graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor's in Cinema & Media Arts. Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted.
The Halo series is in a period of major change, with shake-ups ranging from the end of active Halo Infinite updates to the leap to Unreal Engine 5 in the upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved remake project. These might pale in comparison to the biggest shift, though, which has finally manifested itself in a tangible way.
For nearly 25 years now, Master Chief has been the poster boy for Xbox, with his green suit of armor and opaque helmet defining the brand almost as much as the X logo itself. Although that association won't be going away any time soon, the day that Master Chief crosses the divide has come.
Reddit user Maxkid1995 shared a photo of a Halo: Campaign Evolved PS5 box (as reported by Windows Central), calling the sight "still very insane to see." While the photo, taken at Maxkid1995's local GameStop, doesn't show an actual copy of the game on store shelves, it proves that GameStop is already promoting the game with placeholder boxes.
Xbox revealed that Halo: Campaign Evolved would come out on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms back in 2025, but seeing Master Chief under the PS5 banner on a physical store shelf is an entirely new experience. Some fans think it could be the right decision, with Double_Cleff calling Campaign Evolved's release "pretty much Halo's last chance to salvage any damage done the last decade."
10 or 20 years ago, a PS5 Halo box would have been inconceivable, and finding one at GameStop would have been taken as a prank rather than a serious development. Halo is entering a new era now, though, which could bring an entirely new audience to an already massive series. It might further dilute Xbox's weakening approach to exclusivity, but it might also be the jolt of new life that Halo has been needing.
Just how successful Halo proves to be on Xbox could depend on the quality of Campaign Evolved, which plenty of fans have been uncertain about so far. From the mention of generative AI in development to criticism from one of the original developers, it hasn't necessarily put its best foot forward, and the new look in Unreal Engine 5 arguably loses a lot of what made the atmosphere and art design so special.
For PlayStation owners, however, these concerns may not matter as much. Halo: Campaign Evolved will be some people's first chance to play the original classic, setting a new foundation that Halo will be building on for years to come.
