Hacks Season 4: Cast, Story & Everything We Know

3 days ago 6

Max's hilarious and heartfelt comedy about comedy, Hacks, returned for season 3 in May 2024, and the insightful series has been renewed for a fourth season. Debuting in 2021, the show follows aging comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) who hires recently canceled comedy writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) to help spice up her tired act. While trying to reinvent Deborah's comedy career, the duo also figure out their various personal issues together while navigating the world of comedy. Witty and very modern, Hacks explores the idea of cancel culture with an introspective lens without sacrificing any humor along the way.

A critical darling since its debut episode, Hacks continues to earn high marks from critics with season 3 getting rave reviews and winning awards. Unlike other situation-based comedies that tend to wear their concept thin quite early, Hacks flourishes because of its characters and the dynamics within relationships that continue to grow from season to season. Following in the footsteps of other HBO Max original comedies, Hacks reinvents itself each season to a stronger effect each time. This sort of renewed freshness was a good sign for season 4, and Max quickly picked the show up for more.

Just a few months after it was announced that the fourth season was filming, the latest news sees Hacks win big at the 2025 Golden Globes. A critical darling from the beginning, Hacks continued its hot streak when it snagged two of the three awards it was nominated for. Though Hannah Einbinder didn't win best supporting female actor, Jean Smart did win the best female lead actor prize, and the show itself won Best Television Comedy. This is the show's first Golden Globes win since 2022, and the second time that it has won Best Television Comedy.

Hacks has performed much better at the Emmys thus far, being nominated for 48 awards and winning 9.

Season 4 Is On The Way

Though the show's fate was in little doubt, the decision to renew Hacks for season 4 came on the day the season 3 finale premiered. The series has built a compelling storyline throughout its first three seasons thus far, and the prompt renewal is a sign that Max is keen to keep the momentum going. Especially after season 3 was delayed by the Hollywood strikes, the platform is especially anxious to guarantee more episodes for fans who waited through 2023 without a new season.

Despite this desire to expedite the show, Hacks season 4 didn't begin filming until October 2024. However, the season shouldn't take too long to film, and it's expected that the upcoming season will arrive at some point in early to mid 2025. It's important to note, though, that no one involved with the series has confirmed a release window yet.

Hacks season 3 premiered on May 2, and concluded on May 20, 2024.

The chemistry between that pair crackles with life in each episode, and even if they aren't together in season 4, their respective journeys are the heart and soul of Hacks.

Tense Scenes On Deb's New Late-Night Gig

Deborah sits on a private plane in Hacks

The ending of Hacks season 3 was a total role reversal for the characters and set up a lot of dramatic possibilities for season 4. Having finally landed the prestigious late-night hosting gig, Deborah went on an ego-centric rampage and nearly severed her relationship with Ava over a lie regarding the head writer position. However, having learned callousness from the best, Ava blackmailed her way to the head writer spot and has taken control over her mentor.

When season 4 finally rolls around, Ava will be in a job she's always wanted, but it comes at the expense of her professionalism and her friendship with Deb. The bulk of the season will likely be the highs and lows of Deb's early days hosting the show, and that will make for riveting storytelling. Hacks has always been a show about change, and big changes are on the horizon.
