How To Heal & Get More Medikits in Hyper Light Breaker

2 hours ago 6

There are a lot of things that Hyper Light Breaker doesn’t tell you, and how the healing mechanic works is one of them. It is fairly typical of roguelites to force you to figure things out on your own, and it is true of this developer as well. However, figuring out how to heal can be frustrating, particularly when you don’t start with any Medikits when you first begin playing the game.

There are a lot of things that beginners in Hyper Light Breaker should know. Parrying, accumulating Bright Blood, and upgrading are all things that you work out as you play the game. However, there are still many things that remain mysteries, and it can be hard to figure out a new mechanic. Healing is one of those mechanics, and it is also one of the most important things players will need to know how to do in the game.

Ways To Heal Within The Overgrowth

Healing Items, Defeating Enemies & When To Use Them

There are a number of ways that players can find health in the Overgrowth before they are able to start acquiring Medikits. It isn’t always obvious, however, so players should know what to expect when they go in. Healing will be necessary, as the Overgrowth is quite unforgiving and one fight can leave them with little health left if they get swarmed with enemies. This is particularly true if more enemies are spawned in the middle of a fight.

Hyper Light Breaker Hands-On Preview: A Roguelite Prequel With A Strong Foundation For Growth

Hyper Light Breaker enters early access this week, and though it plans to evolve before final release, the roguelite already has a lot of potential.

These are the main ways to heal:

  1. From Flowers & other items found in the Overgrowth
  2. By using a Medikit if you have them
  3. By getting a drop from an enemy
  4. By defeating a prism boss & collecting the core
  5. By using an item like a holobyte that gives you the ability to heal

That may seem like a lot, but players should note that most of these only give you a few health back at a time. Flowers, for instance, always heal 5 HP. Meaning that to refill all of your health you would have to find a lot of Flowers. Because the maps are procedurally generated, you will have to go searching for them. However, in my experience, there are usually at least 3 in a given area.

Other in-world items like the white and red canisters will also occasionally give HP, but this is not a guarantee. The drops from enemies that give health typically look like orbs with green liquid, which also give around 5 HP. Otherwise, to fully refill your health you will need to defeat a prism boss. Depending on how much HP your character has, it may not be a full heal, but it should be close.

You must collect the core that the prism boss drops. You do not get the health until you have collected it. It does take a second, so make sure you are not surrounded first.

Lastly, many Holobytes and other types of gear allow you to heal based on how you perform certain actions. This is most often the reward for performing Perfect Parries. However, there is also an armor amp that will restore any HP lost if you deal damage right after losing it. However, the best way to heal is through a Medikit, which is much harder to keep in your inventory.

How To Get & Refill Medikits

Upgrading & Acquiring Them

Before you can do anything else, you must have used a Golden Ration to upgrade the skill tree to be able to equip a single Medikit. You will start with the ability to carry 0 Medikits, but you can get a 2nd Medikit further down the tree. This is likely the best upgrade to make first in Hyper Light Breaker, as it is the most consistent way to heal.

Once it is unlocked, there will be two main ways to get Medikits. Both of them will require you to get Medigems, and Medigems are one of the few items that do not carry over between Cycles, so you will have to get new ones. I had an extra Medikit on me at the end of one Cycle, and it was not there at the beginning of the next one.

As the game is in Early Access, not everything is finalized, so this may change before the game launches.

You may also find Medikits behind special locked areas that can be unlocked with a Key in the Overgrowth. It will cost Bright Blood to use, so keep that in mind. However, typically at the beginning of a run, a screen will pop and transfer Medigems into a Medikit automatically if possible. Once you are in the Overgrowth, you can approach any Shrine and transfer Medigems into Medikits as well. The cost in the Overgrowth is more than the cost at the beginning of the run.

Medigems are automatically acquired when you interact with the Flowers. You will want to collect as many as you come across. I also got a few from enemies when I defeated them, but I only saw it happening once or twice, so don’t depend on that, as based on my experience, there is a random element to it. The enemy I saw it drop from was the one that shields other enemies from you.

To use a Medikit, just use the prompt just below the Medikit. It is the up arrow on the D-pad if you are using a controller. It usually refills 75 HP, which is quite close to a full heal. This is the best way to keep your character healthy in Hyper Light Breaker.
