Director Guy Ritchie has been unusually prolific in the last decade, but he has also struggled to launch new franchises. The filmmaker's most recent release was Fountain of Youth, which was designed as a franchise-starter itself. It earned poor reviews, and there has been no word on the possibility of follow-ups since its release last year. Ritchie seems to have moved on, with two movies lined up for release. Despite its hefty reported budget of $180 million and star-studded cast, Fountain of Youth has barely made a cultural impact. Because it was released on the relatively unpopulated Apple TV service, it has managed to pass a major streaming milestone. This week, Fountain of Youth completed 200 days on the domestic Apple TV chart.
The movie debuted last May and has since faced competition from films such as The Family Plan 2, Highest 2 Lowest, and the outstanding hit The Gorge. More recently, the streamer's viewership charts have been topped by the Oscar-nominated hit F1, which grossed over $600 million at the worldwide box office before its streaming debut. Fountain of Youth was headlined by John Krasinski, Natalie Portman, Domhnall Gleeson, and Eiza González, with Stanley Tucci and Carmen Ejogo appearing in supporting roles. Inspired by the Indiana Jones movies and the Uncharted video games, the action-adventure film earned mediocre reviews. It's now sitting at a 35% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Despite its glossy production and some impressive set pieces, Fountain of Youth can't overcome a derivative and uninspired story that fails to capture the creativity of the countless action-adventure flicks it cribs from."
Guy Ritchie Has Two Theatrical Releases Lined Up This Year
Before Fountain of Youth, Ritchie made several failed attempts to launch franchises, with films such as The Man from UNCLE, King Arthur: The Legend of the Sword, and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. However, he has successfully transitioned to streaming, having executive-produced the Paramount+ series MobLand, which emerged as a massive hit last year. He will make a return to the big screen with the upcoming action-thriller In the Grey, which is slated for an April release. This will be followed by the dark comedy Wife & Dog, due out in October.
You can watch Fountain of Youth on Apple TV, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
