James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

For a while to come yet, all the attention from Rockstar fans is understandably going to be on the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI, a game that may well hold the crown of most highly anticipated video game of all time.

The studio is going to be all in on getting that into players' hands until at least November, following which a large portion of ongoing development will be dedicated to maintaining the new-look GTA Online (and ideally some single-player story DLCs and updates this time around).

What comes next is much more up in the air, with the obvious presumption being a third game in the epic Western Red Dead Redemption series. Things might not be as simple as that though, and it could be something entirely different when the time finally does come for a new Rockstar release.

Red Dead Redemption Fans May Want To Sit Down

As first reported by GAMINGbible, the studio was kicking around the idea for an entirely new IP known as Project Medieval, which was originally revealed as part of a leak several years ago.

That was largely all we had heard about the idea until Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser made an appearance on the Lex Fridman podcast, where he mentioned that Project Medieval was actually in the works some years ago.

“We played around with a knights concept, you know, knights and trying to do a sort of a version of a mythological game," Houser confirmed in his interview, during a discussion on the development and release of Red Dead Redemption 2.

“That could've been fun, and I still love that idea, but we never went very far with it. We never got to writing any of it, just did some backstory and played around with a few ideas. But it's something that I thought I'd never do, then I kind of fell in love with it a little bit."

The fact that it was definitely real, and that Rockstar is open to the idea of new IPs beyond GTA and Red Dead, could mean that the next game we get from the developer is something entirely new, and that can only be an exciting thing.

Is Red Dead Redemption 3 Ever Coming?

The unfortunate caveat to the exciting prospect of a totally new game from Rockstar is that it would leave Red Dead Redemption 3 out in the cold for a long time to come. Houser himself also confirmed that he, and many others at the studio, saw it as a closed two-part narrative, only furthering potential doubts about a third game. Let's just hope that GTA VI is everything we need it to be, before we start worrying about any of that.
