Golden Globes Music Nominees: Gomez vs. Grande In Supporting Actress Pool And Multiple Nods For ‘Challengers,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ and ‘The Wild Robot’

As music plays a crucial role in film and television, it is no surprise that many projects already in the conversation have received Golden Globe nominations for their scores and original songs. Nominations for Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez in acting marks a rare occurrence this year of musicians crossing over into acting.

Grande celebrates her first-ever Golden Globe nod for her supporting role as Glinda in Wicked: Part One while Gomez has been double-nominated for her acting in Only Murders in the Building and Emilia Pérez. Gomez will compete with Grande in the supporting actress category, which is a rare moment for music stars. In 2015, Lady Gaga and Queen Latifah both were nominated for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film.

The Wild Robot, directed by Chris Sanders, has nominations in the Best Original Score category for Kris Bowers’ work as well as a Best Original Song nod for Maren Morris’ “Kiss the Sky.” Challengers earned Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score and a Best Original Song nomination for their track “Compress/Repress.” Emilia Pérez has two Best Original Song nominations for “El Mal” by Clément Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Clément Ducol and Camille.

Hans Zimmer’s Dune: Part Two soundtrack received a Best Original Score nod on top of its Grammy nomination last month for Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media. He also received a Grammy nod for his song “Love Will Survive” for The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor are also Grammy-nominated for the score soundtrack to Challengers (2024) starring Zendaya, Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor. Ross, along with Leopold Ross and Nick Cuba, has two nominations in that same category — Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media — with FX’s Shōgun, which also netted many trophies at the 2024 Emmys. Ross’ indie rock group Nine Inch Nails will score the upcoming Tron: Ares film set to hit theaters in 2025.
