Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) is set to guest star on the Season 2 finale of the acclaimed CBS series Matlock.
Rodriguez’s casting on the Kathy Bates-led series has been rumored for some time, as showrunner and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman also held the same titles on the hit CW series Jane the Virgin. Rodriguez becomes the third actor from Jane the Virgin to appear on Matlock, following Yael Grobglas and Justina Machado.
“My heart is exploding with happiness that Gina will be joining the show for the season two finale. She is pure magic and our collaboration on Jane was a highlight of my life. Having her on Matlock is a dream come true.”
Matlock stars Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases. Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice. Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), the son of the head of the firm (Beau Bridges), is intrigued by Matty and her clever skills.
It’s notable that Rodriguez will step onto the CBS series in the final episode of the season, considering that Snyder Urman confirmed to Deadline in December that the Wellbrexa case will conclude at the end of Season 2. Potentially, Rodriguez could be setting up or will be a part of a new story that will continue into the already renewed third season.
“It’s going to end at the end of the season. We have a great ending and the launch for the next season. There’s a different energy coming in,” Snyder Urman told Deadline in December about the end of the Wellbrexa case.
Edwin Hodge, husband of series star Marshall, will also appear on this season of Matlock as a potential love interest for Marshall’s character Olympia. He will play Langston, the kind of guy who can show up late, knowing he’ll charm everyone into forgetting about it as soon as he arrives. A double PhD in neuroscience and philosophy, he is a deep thinker… and a smooth talker.
Urman executive produces the CBS Studios-produced series alongside Joanna Klein, Eric Christian Olsen, Kat Coiro and Bates.
Rodriguez is best known for playing the title role on the hit series Jane the Virgin, for which she won a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy. Rodriguez recently appeared in Season 3 of ABC’s Will Trent as Assistant District Attorney Marion Alba. She also starred in ABC’s comedy series Not Dead Yet and co-hosted Lucky 13 for ABC. Fans can also see her in Robert Rodriguez’s reboot of Spy Kids for Netflix and the rom-com Players for Netflix.
