Elden Ring may have just broken an A24 record.
Based on mythology, backstory, and world-building by Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin, Elden Ring began life as a hit video game from studio FromSoftware and director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Now, filmmaker Alex Garland is set to write and direct an adaptation of the 2022 game for A24, and the project just got a major update.
Per a new report from THR, Elden Ring has now entered production in the UK. The A24 film is said to feature a production budget of well over $100 million, making it the company's most expensive movie to date by a significant margin, beating Marty Supreme's (2025) reported $70 million budget. Filming is set to take place over the course of roughly 100 days.
This new report also features an updated cast list for the project, which stars a number of past Garland collaborators. Those already revealed for the project include Cailee Spaeny, Ben Whishaw, and Kit Connor. Nick Offerman, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Emma Laird, Ruby Cruz, John Hodgkinson, Peter Serafinowicz, and Jefferson Hall have now also joined the film.
Set to hit theaters on March 3, 2028, it will be some time before a trailer is released for the Elden Ring movie, but A24 is evidently confident in Garland's vision for the adaptation. Prior to Marty Supreme, Garland previously held the record for most expensive A24 movie with Civil War (2024), which carried a $50 million price tag.
Elden Ring's reported budget is part of larger growth for A24, with the company continuing to expand in recent years beyond being a niche indie distributor and production company. So far, the higher budget plays are paying off.
Civil War grossed $127 million worldwide, while Marty Supreme grossed over $180 million, making both films commercial successes. If Elden Ring features a production budget of $100 million, it will need to become the highest-grossing A24 movie of all time by a sizable margin. Using the standard Hollywood rule of thumb, the film may need to gross close to $250 million to reach profitability.
This theatrical bet from A24 follows the massive success of the Elden Ring video game. Chronicling the player character's attempts to restore the mythical Elden Ring in order to bring peace to the Lands Between, the game has sold over 30 million copies and received over 400 Game of the Year awards. The latter figure makes it one of the most critically acclaimed games in history.
While many questions remain about Elden Ring, A24 is clearly giving Garland the resources needed to pull off the game's ambitious story and epic world-building. It will be some time before Garland's vision is officially shown off, but this is one video game adaptation to look forward to.
