Gears of War fans have been waiting for a long time to play a brand-new installment of the third-person shooter series, and June 7 will be a major milestone for the series' return. Gears 5 came out in 2019, and the Gears Tactics spin-off shortly followed in 2020, but since then, the only new release for the series has been Gears of War: Reloaded, an excellent remaster of the original game, but poor consolation for longtime fans eager to chainsaw their way through fresh meat.
The lone shining beacon on the Kryll-shrouded horizon is Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel announced back in 2024 that nonetheless remains a bit mysterious. It focuses on its titular event, Emergence Day, the single most consequential day in Seran history, and will see the return of iconic duo Marcus and Dom return as the protagonists. June 7 will finally shed more light on E-Day.
The annual summer Xbox Games Showcase will take place on June 7, 2026, as confirmed by Xbox Wire. For the last few years, Microsoft's gaming division has taken the opportunity to take a deep dive into one of its upcoming games as a companion to the showcase. Instead of a traditional spot in the broadcast, Gears of War: E-Day will receive its own Direct immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.
The Gears of War: E-Day Direct will provide "new details, gameplay and insights about the hugely anticipated origin story." As it stands, E-Day has only had its one reveal trailer; it's been nearly two years of radio silence from The Coalition and Xbox Game Studios. E-Day getting the Direct spot (which went to The Outer Worlds 2 last year) seems almost like soft confirmation that the game is still on track to release in 2026.
Details on E-Day remain scarce, but we do know the broad strokes. It will largely walk back Gears 5's open-zone innovations and return to a more linear cover shooter experience. In the same vein, it's hoping to recapture some of the original terror instilled by the Locust horde, and bring back the melancholy that defined the original trilogy, the first game especially. Other than that, we know it's a third-person shooter, and will take place over the course of multiple days, not just on Emergence Day, which thankfully means the Cole Train can return.
Prequels can be difficult to navigate, but a game focused on E-Day is an immediately appealing idea. It has loomed over the series thus far as the single most traumatic event in the canon, resulting in billions of Seran deaths. For a long time it felt like an event too momentous not to grace with a sequel, and now that Marcus and Dom's voice actors are returning, E-Day is shaping up nicely even before we've seen any gameplay. Gears of War has mostly been on ice for years, but June 7 is going to be a day fans won't want to miss.
