Summary

  • Collider's Steven Weintraub talks with Jason Momoa about his role as Lobo in Supergirl.
  • Momoa discusses bringing Lobo to life on screen, designing his epic motorcycle, and his only rule for making a solo Lobo movie.
  • The former Aquaman also shares updates on A Minecraft Movie sequel and Dune 3.

Fans have been waiting a long time for Jason Momoa’s appearance in Supergirl as the “evil and vile and strong and ugly” Lobo (Stan Lee’s words, not ours) — but not quite as long as Momoa has been. While talking with Collider’s Steven Weintraub ahead of the movie’s upcoming theatrical release, the former Aquaman talks about stepping into what he calls his “dream role” and his one criterion for making a full-length Lobo movie.

In Supergirl, from director Craig Gillespie, Milly Alcock joins the DCU as Kara Zor-El, the less-than-lawful-good cousin of Superman (David Corenswet). In stark contrast to Kal-El, Kara has little interest in adapting to Earth, preferring to keep to herself and her best friend, super dog Krypto. But when a merciless band of space pirates puts Kyrpto’s life in danger, Kara embarks on a journey that crosses paths with a young companion looking for revenge (Eve Ridley) and “the ditz from the dive bar,” Lobo, in a struggle between vengeance and justice.

Don’t miss the full conversation in the video above or the transcript below, where Momoa talks about bringing the DCU’s version of Lobo to life through top-notch makeup, prosthetics, and Dennis McCarthy’s bike-building expertise. He discusses the possibility and conditions of doing a solo Lobo movie, a battle of strengths between Lobo, Aquaman, and Street Fighter’s Blanka, and shares exciting updates on A Minecraft Movie’s sequel and Dune 3.

Jason Momoa Isn't Making a Solo Lobo Movie Unless It's Rated R

"It's all I want."

COLLIDER: Are you scheduled to go to Atlanta any time soon? I ask because that's where they're filming a certain Superman sequel, and a lot of us are hoping that Lobo could make an appearance.

JASON MOMOA: Fuck, I wish. No. I'm not.

That's very disappointing.

MOMOA: Sorry.

Have James and Peter talked to you about the possibility of an R-rated Lobo movie? Because for a lot of us, this is all we want.

MOMOA: It’s all I want, and I promise — I'm just going to put this out there right now — I do not have any interest in making a Lobo PG-13 movie. So, will he be a part of some other movies? If they want me, I'll be there. But if I make a solo movie, I'm not doing it unless it’s rated R.

Thank you for saying that. I'm trying to will this into existence.

MOMOA: As I will with you, but it has to be rated R.

If your Aquaman, Lobo, and Blanka were to get into a fight, who comes in first, who is in second, and who is easily defeated?

MOMOA: Blanka is easily defeated. Well, I mean, Lobo can't be killed, but I mean Aquaman, he can, but the trident's pretty powerful. So, I think Lobo walks out prevailing.

I was also wondering if it depends on where the fight takes place, like in the ocean.

MOMOA: He could drown his ass, yes. But Blanka is screwed either way. To me, personally, I think Lobo and Aquaman have a lot in common. They’d probably just grab a couple of beers and go ride motorcycles and just have some beers, and they'll be perfectly fine.

Something I learned when prepping for this interview, and I don't know if you know this, but Stan Lee said his favorite DC character was Lobo.

MOMOA: Absolutely.

He said, "I thought he was a character that should be a Marvel character because he's the worst human being on Earth, and he was so evil and vile and strong and ugly, and I loved him. But he belonged to DC."

MOMOA: It's amazing. That's from the man.

Jason Momoa on Becoming Lobo in His "Dream Role"

"It's an amalgamation of all the things that we love."

You said this is a role that you've wanted for a long time. I know how passionate this has been for you. Was there a specific panel or a cover or version of Lobo that lived in your head that was in your mind for when you wanted to portray him on screen?

MOMOA: It's tough because some things don't translate. You know what I mean? Just because I love a certain image of him, we can't make it that big. He's not the Hulk. He's not this and that. So, the really cool thing about this journey doing Lobo was we have so many talented artists that are coming together, and so creating this was a collaborative process. So everything from the wardrobe to my prosthetics on my body, everyone got to pick their favorite bits. So, I mean, it's an amalgamation of all the things that we love.

Something that I just couldn't believe, and you talked about, was how you were covered in prosthetics, makeup, and the red contact lenses. What is it actually like for you, who's never done something like that, to actually be that underwater, if you will, with everything around your body?

MOMOA: It was amazing in this because I knew I had five or six scenes in this, and I'm playing my dream role. Doing a four to five-month shoot of this every day, I don't think it would be the same. It'd be very challenging. So, doing a solo, you’d really have to figure out how you're going to pull this off, which is fine from here, so I think you can get away with certain body things, but we want to show it off in this one. It was awesome. It was fun, and it actually helped me be the character more because I just get to play pretend, and I'm in that whole thing and I just, I don't know, it helped me more.

I would imagine you look in the mirror, you see the red contacts, you see what you look like, and you're like, "I'm not Jason. I'm Lobo."

MOMOA: Bro, it's amazing. Jen was there with me, and she puts the contacts in and I can see it in her face. I can see when I open my eyes and I see it on her face, and I see everybody looking at me. They put the cigar in, and then the laugh comes, and then you're just like, “I'm gonna fuck everything up right now. I'm gonna get on the bike.” There were no inhibitions in every way. I was free.

Jason Momoa's Very First 'Supergirl' Scene Went "Full Throttle"

"That's why I'm playing Lobo."

I know that you love motorcycles.

MOMOA: That’s an understatement.

Exactly. So, with the bike in the film, did you at any point want to be involved in what it's going to look like, or any sort of tweaks you wanted to make, and was it in your contract that you get to take it home?

MOMOA: A lot of things I tried to put in my contract to take home. Unfortunately, I did not. This one was a hard one to steal. They're not gonna let me have that one. But I was a part of it. Dennis [McCarthy] was at the heart of designing it. There was probably a whole team, but Dennis really put it together. He did like stuff with Fast, so I've worked with him before. He's worked on a lot of my cars, and so he would show me images of it that they didn't know that they were showing me. It was just because we were pals. So, I got to see a lot of stuff.

It's interesting because it does switch into other modes, but we didn't really use that in this one. But obviously, when he's in space and things like that. So, it's a cool bike. It's challenging as shit to ride.

That's what I wanted to ask you. What was it like for you in the full costume and everything, when you're actually sitting on the bike, and at what point were you like, "Get the fuck out of here. I'm on set as Lobo. I'm on the bike. This is what I've dreamt about for forever?" What is that like for you?

MOMOA: It’s as big as it gets, man. I had the time of my life. My scene, the absolute first scene, is a shot of me riding the motorcycle in, and it's a really, really challenging shot because you've gotta gas it. You’ve gotta go full throttle. You hit a mark, and the explosion is going to go off if anything messes up. I got a wig on, fire is coming at me, and you're on gravel, and a crane’s coming at you. Obviously, I don't want to just stop and do something. I want it to be cool. So you’ve got to really gas it. You’ve got to pass your mark where you're supposed to stop, and you’ve got to just rip it and slide into it. We slid into it and pulled the cigar, and it's perfect. I was like, “That’s why. That's why I'm playing Lobo.”

I know you love music. If Lobo had a playlist in space to listen to as he's cruising about, what's on that playlist?

MOMOA: “Big Take Over” kicking it off, with Bad Brains. I mean, anything Motörhead, but let's just say “Ace of Spades,” and then “Motorbreath,” Metallica, Pantera. Metal.

There's already a Lobo popcorn bucket. Is Lobo the kind of guy who would respect that, destroy that, or demand royalties?

MOMOA: Oh, man, he’d definitely demand royalties, but he’d break that shit too. But Jason’s definitely gonna keep it and collect it.

There are a ton of people who love the first Minecraft movie. You guys did such a great job. What do you want to tease fans about the sequel?

MOMOA: Oh my God, everything that the fans want, we're doing, and we're having the time of our lives. It's so much fun. I'm having the time of my life with Jack [Black], and the movie’s going to be amazing. It's personal, it's fun, it's great. This is a whole other thing.

I know they're bringing in some stuff that fans really want to see. Do you want to tease anything?

MOMOA: I'm not saying shit.

You know that I think the first two Dune movies are masterpieces. What was it like shooting Dune 3, especially because Greig Fraser didn't shoot the third one? Was there any difference on set, and what do you want to tease people about it?

MOMOA: Denis [Villeneuve] is one of my favorites in the whole world, so it was great to be back on set, to be doing a lot of it with Timothée [Chalamet]. Linus [Sandgren] is an amazing DP, so I've seen a lot already, and it's beautiful. Greig’s the man, but the movie looks beautiful. I think all three of them stand alone as their own little masterpiece. I think every Dune fan is going to be so stoked. No one's let down. This thing's going to be amazing.
