The fantasy genre really is the gift that keeps giving across all different forms of media, whether it's in big budget films, or sprawling 80+ hour video games. The first that pops to mind for most right-thinking people is The Lord of the Rings, with Tolkien's masterful epic serving as an influence on basically everything that has cropped up in the genre since.
Over on Reddit, one user shared a post detailing how they believed a big-budget adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire is long overdue, citing the success of games like Hogwarts Legacy as evidence of their point. They did also acknowledge the existence of brilliant fan projects, like the overhaul mods for Crusader Kings III, but what they really want is an experience that is "trapped in a text and menu simulator forever".
As you might expect, that idea proved pretty popular, with plenty of comments chiming in to request something similar from a major developer.
"I feel like the best chance for an ASoIaF game would be to set it during Aegon’s conquest, and have it run two main characters. One campaign siding with Aegon and the conquerors, the other could be a Dornish soldier fighting back against the Targ conquest," one comment read.
While another added, "The people who do the Kingdom Come games are working on a LOTR game right now, new elder scrolls soon-ish, I wouldn't be surprised to see a big studio try and grab the rights for a big AAA ASoIaF-based RPG."
"I recently played Game of Thrones: Kingsroad. I quit after a couple of days because the nature of MMOs just isn’t for me, but I was impressed with the open world and the story didn’t seem half bad. But it was a glimpse of what a proper GoT open world game could be," a third said.
Despite the obviously lacking and controversial ending of the TV show, the appetite is clearly there for an open-world adventure with the Game of Thrones universe. With the existing fan base waiting to go, you think it'd be a solid guarantee that it would do pretty well, but the money needed to produce it in the first place may be too much for a lot of studios to take it on at all.
