FX’s 'Friends Meets New Girl' Show Is The Best Sitcom You Missed

1 week ago 9

FX is home to a sitcom that is the best combination of the strongest elements of Friends and New Girl, and it’s not too late to catch up with it. The branch of sitcoms is one of the most popular, with many titles from it now ranking among the best TV shows of all time. Many sitcoms have also been greatly influential, not just in the genre but in TV in general, as is the case for I Love Lucy, Friends, and Seinfeld.

Created by Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw, Adults premiered on FX in May 2025, and though it was well-received by critics, it ended up being a silent hit. Although Adults hasn’t reached mainstream popularity, it’s one of the best sitcoms of the decade so far, feeling like a fresh entry in a genre that seems to have already seen it all.

Adults follows friends Samir (Malik Elassal), Billie (Lucy Freyer), Issa (Amita Rao), Anton (Owen Thiele), and Paul (Jack Innanen) who live together in Samir’s childhood home as his parents are on a long, long trip. Together, they go through the many ups and downs of early adulthood, from medical emergencies and debt to modern dating and career struggles. Surely, Adults has a simple premise, but it works perfectly and, in the process, the show modernizes sitcoms.

Adults keeps the traditional sitcom elements of an ensemble cast, short episodes, subplots in every episode, relatable characters, and a different situation in every episode that triggers everything. However, it also brings freshness into the genre by getting rid of laugh tracks (which is a lot more common in sitcoms nowadays), having perfect and natural comedic timing, characters the audience can actually relate to (whether viewers are the same age or older), and covering serious topics that also speak to a wider audience.

Adults is up-to-date with the struggles of young adults, which aren’t strange to older viewers, either, such as unstable jobs, medical debt, housing issues, and the anxieties of adult life. Adults feels fresh despite its traditional sitcom basis, and it knows how to speak to not just Gen Z but a wider audience, too.

When Will Adults Season 2 Release?

Thanks to its positive critical reception, Adults was renewed for a second season in October 2025. Although season 2 of Adults doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, it was announced in April 2025 that it will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 11, 2026. However, FX has already confirmed that the season will be released this year.

Adults season 2 could arrive at the beginning of the fall, and it’s expected to follow the same release plan as the first season. Adults season 1 released its first two episodes on FX on May 28, 2025, with the rest airing in back-to-back pairs every week. On May 29, the whole series was released on Hulu (and Disney+ in other countries).

As for what Adults season 2 could be about, and without getting into spoiler territory, it’s expected to explore the aftermath of that twist in the group’s dynamic at the end of season 1, as well as the obvious chemistry between some of them and the future of their stay at Samir’s family home. Hopefully, Adults will continue the formula that made its first season a success and even improve on it, helping it reach a wider audience.
