In 2016, Tom Hiddleston first starred in a gripping 12-part spy thriller series, a performance that stands out as one of the finest of his career. Over the years, Hiddleston has amassed quite an impressive filmography, with appearances in franchise hits such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Loki, Thor, and The Avengers, as well as movies like The Life of Chuck and I Saw the Light. However, it's his role in a TV spy thriller based on a John le Carré novel that cemented his place as an all-time great actor.
Tom Hiddleston plays the role of Jonathan Pine, an ex-military hotel night manager in a busy Cairo hotel, in the BBC, AMC, and now Prime Video's critically acclaimed espionage series, The Night Manager. His portrayal of Pine in the spy thriller remains, even to this day, one of his most memorable roles. The series, which recently released its second season, highlights Hiddleston’s ability to carry a story through subtlety, tension, and pure skill, demonstrating that the actor wholeheartedly deserves to be a leading man.
Tom Hiddleston's The Night Manager Role Is As Good As Loki
The idea that Tom Hiddleston’s performance in The Night Manager rivals his portrayal of Loki may seem outrageous at first. After all, Loki is one of the biggest TV shows to come from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and has become a key part of modern pop culture. After a second look, however, it becomes abundantly clear that Hiddleston’s role as Jonathan Pine is every bit as compelling as what he brought to his character in Loki.
As the title character in Loki — and throughout his performances in the rest of the MCU — Hiddleston fully embraced the larger-than-life charisma of the God of Mischief. This allowed the actor to lean into Loki’s flamboyance while also engaging with his emotional growth as the series went on and his story evolved. However, in The Night Manager, Hiddleston strips all of that back. The actor’s innate charm also shines through in the spy thriller, but there’s an undeniable element of magnetism, too.
Hiddleston’s portrayal of Pine in The Night Manager has a quiet intensity about it. There’s something unmistakably dangerous about him. During most of the show, Pine shifts between being himself and pretending to be someone else while trying to keep his true intentions hidden. Given the way Hiddleston balances his two identities in the series, as well as his involvement in the show's seamless action scenes, it's no wonder audiences once envisioned him as the next James Bond.
In The Night Manager, Hiddleston can’t rely on his character's supernatural powers or over-the-top storylines to drive the show’s narrative forward; as a result, the actor appears more authentic. His performance might feel quieter and more restrained, but that's what makes it one of his most interesting roles. Few actors could pull off this part convincingly.
Only A Really Great Role Could Survive A 10-Year Gap Between Seasons
The Night Manager season 1 was released in 2016. Given the show's critical acclaim and success (season 1 holds an impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes critics' score), an immediate follow-up was expected. Instead, it took 10 years for the sophomore season of The Night Manager to grace the small screen, extending le Carré's story beyond its original ending. For most TV shows, having a decade between seasons could be a death sentence, particularly now, when audiences are used to prestige shows releasing new installments every two or three years, at most.

The Night Manager has come storming back to the summit of television, but there are other similarly brilliant TV spy thrillers out there, too.
The fact that The Night Manager survived and thrived after a 10-year gap between seasons is a testament not only to how gripping the show itself was, but also to the effectiveness of Hiddleston’s portrayal of Pine a decade after he first played the role. The second season of the series remembered what made its debut installment great, leaning on Hiddleston's compelling performance to keep audiences invested in the story as a shadowy threat surfaces to endanger Pine's new life and alias.
In a series filled with Oscar, BAFTA, and Emmy-winning talent, including Olivia Colman, Elizabeth Debicki, and Hugh Laurie, Hiddleston remains the show's biggest draw, reminding audiences why he was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in 2016. With Hiddleston in the driver's seat, The Night Manager season 2 broke BBC viewership records; clearly, audiences thought the wait was worth it, though hopefully, season 3 won't take as long.
