We would be completely in the dark about there ever being a possibility of a Venom game developed by Insomniac if it was not for a malicious data breach in December 2023. Now, assuming that this still-unannounced game has not been canned, fans of Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games are clinging to the hope that they will see it someday.
On X, fans are expressing their continued interest in the leaked Venom game, which has been officially addressed but not confirmed to be in development. It is anyone’s guess what Insomniac’s slate looks like, especially with its online Great Web game reportedly getting canceled, but a Venom game that fleshes out Marvel’s Spider-Man 2’s third-act symbiote invasion plot and Carnage side quest would be phenomenal for the franchise and highly anticipated by gamers.
Fans Are Holding Out Hope For A Venom Game
Fans are eager for an Insomniac Venom game and wish to see it actually come to fruition with a public, official announcement. At this point, a Venom game would surely be following Marvel’s Wolverine sometime in 2027, with the potential to be released alongside the PS6 as a marquee launch title like Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales was.
User Worm states, “Gotta keep holding on to hope!” and, sadly, that is all fans can do in the meantime. Until it is confirmed to be canceled or nonexistent, though, gamers will probably wonder when they might see it rear its head, and anywhere that Marvel’s Wolverine could make an appearance (besides a dedicated gameplay State of Play, perhaps) might also be somewhere that this Venom game may appear, as well.
The announcement of an Insomniac Wolverine game came out of left field during the PlayStation Showcase 2021, where Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was announced with a formal teaser of its own, suggesting that a Venom game reveal could hypothetically accompany a new Marvel’s Wolverine trailer somewhere.
Plus, Insomniac narrative director Jon Paquette teased before the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 that the potential for a Venom spin-off game would be steered by what fans seemed to want most:
“We’re focused on ‘Spider-Man 2,’ and what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna wait to see how the fans react. We’re gonna listen to the fans and we’re gonna ask ourselves, ‘Okay, what do the fans really want?’”
However, considering all that leaked from Insomniac and what the studio seemingly has planned for the future, anticipation has understandably dwindled for a Venom game as it is looking increasingly unrealistic. If Marvel’s Wolverine is truly a precursor for an X-Men ensemble game, Insomniac may be slowly transitioning from one corner of Marvel mythology to another.
An Insomniac Venom Game Makes A Lot Of Sense
As aptly named user We Want a Venom Game writes, “Insomniac is sitting on gold.” Indeed, the thought of Venom’s playable Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sequence being stretched out into its own Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales-length half-sequel is tantalizing.
It seems like a no-brainer as something for Insomniac to pursue, and it hopefully will. Either way, Marvel’s Wolverine is already looking tremendously impressive as a surprising pivot for Insomniac, and the studio’s future slate will likely be equally incredible with or without a Venom game.
