Warning! SPOILERS ahead for Fire Country season 5, episode 1.One character being conspicuously absent from Fire Country season 5’s premiere hints at a disastrous path the firefighting drama might take with this season’s story. Fire Country’s return on our screens during CBS’s 2026-2027 TV cycle painted an entirely different picture of the atmosphere in Edgewater from what could be seen in season 4. Indeed, while Fire Country season 4 ended with a devastating flood, the tone of season 5’s premiere was uncharacteristically upbeat, especially as the episode focused a great deal on the strain Station 42 was under due to underfunding and understaffing.
A sinkhole opening in the middle of Edgewater during the Founder’s Day Festival brought Fire Country season 5’s premiere back to its familiar state of danger, letting Bode and the others at Station 42 shine during yet another daring rescue. The sinkhole also made it possible for Fire Country season 5 to introduce CJ, a former firefighter passing through Edgewater who proved essential during the rescue and who became fast friends with Bode after threatening him with anti-bear spray the first time they met by chance in the woods.
The accident happening at the festival ensured that several of the Edgewater residents were present. However, Chloe Mackenzie (Alona Tal) was notably absent, despite dating Bode and the event being particularly important for him, as Bode represented Cal Fire for the first time at the Founder’s Day Festival. Her absence was reasonably justified, but it could also hide a development that would be disastrous for Fire Country season 5 to enact.
Chloe's Absence & CJ's Introduction Sets CJ Up As Bode's Future Love Interest
MovieStillsDB
Fire Country season 4 made a point to introduce Chloe and her relationship with Bode without any rush, with the characters first connecting over their shared past and trying to get through to Tyler. Their decision to start dating wasn’t influenced by any life-or-death situation, with their relationship developing easily. When Eve teased Bode about Chloe being absent in Fire Country season 5’s premiere, he seemed unaffected by her missing out on his representation of Cal Fire in an official capacity, hinting at his being okay with that development.
While everything pointed to Chloe and Bode’s relationship being in a good place, her absence from a festival attended by seemingly the entire town of Edgewater was odd. This became even more evident after Bode spent the vast majority of Fire Country season 5’s premiere with CJ, first chatting about Smokey’s coffee and then saving the patients in the sinkhole together.
It’s worth noting that CJ’s introduction didn’t hint in any way at her and Bode’s connection being romantic. Still, Bode and CJ evidently clicked, and if Chloe were to continue staying away, it wouldn’t be too difficult for Fire Country season 5 to prop CJ up as Bode’s love interest. This would nevertheless be a mistake, especially after Bode’s long string of romances throughout Fire Country.
Why Fire Country Cannot Keep Changing Bode's Girlfriend Forever
Ever since its inception, Fire Country painted Bode and Gabriela’s relationship as predetermined, with the two unable to escape their feelings for one another even if Gabriela was originally dating Jake. While Gabriela was the only one of Bode’s love interests who returned cyclically, as Bode expressed his feelings for her repeatedly, her role had a specific function, in the sense that the promise of their relationship once he got out of Three Rock kept him hopeful.
Throughout Fire Country, each one of Bode’s love interests served a specific function. Rebecca of Black Creek Con Camp helped him with Freddy’s legal troubles, while Audrey held him accountable as they both trained to become firefighters. Once they served their purpose in Bode’s story, they all disappeared one way or another. Even worse, they weren’t fleshed out as characters in their own right, with Fire Country using them to further Bode’s storylines without developing them into fully fledged characters with hopes and fears.
CJ’s introduction in Fire Country season 5, episode 1 allowed her to come off as a compelling character whose past as a firefighter inevitably scarred her in some way. Her connection with Bode is effortless, and their friendship would be a welcome addition to the cluster of relationships in the firefighting drama. If Fire Country season 5 turned CJ into Bode’s romantic interest, it would repeat a catastrophic mistake that the first responder drama already made multiple times, making it imperative that CJ stays away from Bode romantically.
