The first two parts of the Final Fantasy VII Remake were spectacular reimaginings of one of the most iconic RPGs of the PlayStation 1 era, and with the third and concluding entry on the way, excitement has really started to build.

The initial release covers the original game's earliest throes, largely within the city of Midgar, while Final Fantasy VII Rebirth works through the rest of what was disc one, through the City of Ancients and Kalm.

The third part will round out the rest of the story, and fans have actually just received a major update from the developer themselves which confirms that the final product is a lot further along than some may have expected.

In an interview with Automaton, director Naoki Hamaguchi shared several interesting updates about their progress on the game, and it's safe to say that it's good news for expectant fans who want to play it as soon as possible.

Development of the third installment is progressing very smoothly, and we’re almost exactly on schedule with the milestones we set at the beginning of the project. The game is already in a playable state, and right now, we’re in the final push phase, refining and building up the experience. We’re at the stage where the quality improves day by day, and each time we play it, the scenery feels different, so it’s genuinely exciting. I think it won’t be too long before we’re able to share some kind of update with everyone.

Though he didn't go as far as giving us a release window, the fact that the game is in a playable state and the team is currently in the "final push," can only be a good thing. In the same interview, Hamaguchi also confirmed that the final game was actively being developed for the Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2.

Both of the previous games eventually came to other platforms, but there was a significant wait that left some feeling like they've been left out in the cold. The director also wanted to stress that this pursuit won't affect the final quality of the game in any way, either visually or in terms of performance.

Final Fantasy Fans Are Hyped For The End Of This Saga

Over on Reddit, players reacted to all of that exciting news, and it's safe to say they are very keen to get their hands on it before long.

"It’s funny how with this trilogy I have complete faith in the devs. Any update I hear about Part 3 I just think to myself 'yep these guys are cooking so hard,'" one comment read.

"I think these recent ports have really shown that the development team is in-sync. Hopefully, Rebirth is as big a success as Remake has been for Switch 2 and Xbox," another added.

With hype building, it's safe to say that fans will want to hear more about the Final Fantasy VII Remake before long. Let's hope the team delivers on everything they're expecting.
