Released back in 2024 as the sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, marking the second installment in the trilogy that aims to remake 1997's Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Following the story of Cloud and friends as they embark on a journey across the Planet to prevent the megacorporation Shinra from exploiting life essence, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was considered a hit, even going on to be considered for the coveted Game of the Year award. Whilst fans wait for the third and final installment in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, it seems as though the beloved Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has received a limited-time free download in the meantime.
From 28 April onward, players interested in checking out Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will have the opportunity to try-before-they-buy, courtesy of a free demo on both the Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X. With the final game consisting of fourteen chapters, the demo will allow you to experience the first two with the first focusing on Cloud in a flashback which sees him witness the Nibelheim incident. In comparison, Chapter 2 will bring us back to present-day as Cloud and co. regroup in Kalm after escaping from Midgar in the final events of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Not only that, but with progress being saved, you will be able to transfer it to the full game if you should choose to purchase it after you have completed the demo.
Additionally, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth set to launch on the Nintendo Switch 2 on 3 June 2026, this will be the perfect opportunity to try out the brand-new port ahead of its full launch. According to the official Square Enix website, partaking in the demo will also reward players with bonuses for the full game, including a Kupo Charm that boosts the chance of collecting extra materials, and a Survival Set.
Set across a vast and vibrant planet, FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH sees Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith and Red XIII escape from the dystopian city of Midgar into the wide world beyond. To hunt down Sephiroth, a haunting figure from Cloud's past bent on ruling the planet, these unlikely heroes join forces with new companions like the spirited ninja operative Yuffie and the wisecracking, feline-shaped robot Cait Sith. FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH delivers an unforgettable experience to players filled with unexpected twists, memorable characters and jaw-dropping set pieces that longtime fans and newcomers can both enjoy.
Now with the rumor that the third part in the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy is on the not-so-distant horizon, fans are starting to feel the hype, especially following the success of the two installments that have been released so far. However, with no official release date, we will just have to make do with this epic free download which gives you the perfect opportunity to find a new favorite game at no extra cost.
