When it comes to top Final Fantasy games, fans can debate until the cows come home. But there is a typical shortlist consensus among many long-term fans, and Final Fantasy 6 often ends up on top.
That's why so many folks have taken to Reddit to discuss a Final Fantasy 6 remake, and what it would entail. In short, it basically seems impossible given how ambitious it was.
An Official Final Fantasy 6 Remake Would Be A Challenge
More So Than Any Other
Every few years, there's a big movement to remake any given Final Fantasy game, but FF6 comes up very often in those debates. The problem is, it's such a massive game it would be tough to bring it back in a new context, much like Chrono Trigger or other branching, complicated RPG classics from the SNES era.
In the post, a fan writes: "As much as I'd personally love to wait and see it, I think a lot of us would be perfectly happy with something like a HD-2D game? or even something Vanillaware light that captures Yoshitaka Amano's ink style if they don't want to spend 20 years on it. Tho a spin-off at least in that full next gen remake style would be incredible."
Some folks don't want a full-on remake at all, and think the original still holds up: "We don't need another super expansive remake. Just give us the exact same game with upgraded graphics and some quality of life changes!"
Others are getting tired of the remakes from Square Enix as a whole and want more original Final Fantasy games: "To be fair I'm starting to get a bit sick and tired of remake after remake, 7 was good but it was already 3D and translated well. Those pixel remakes should have been the end of it."
Final Fantasy 6 Is Considered One Of The Best FF Games
And One Of The Best RPGs Of All Time
Final Fantasy 6 is regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time on any platform, in any franchise. Given that it came out in 1994 and delivered a massive cast of likable original characters while providing heavier themes than any Final Fantasy before it; that's a massive feat.
There's a reason why it lives on in so much fan art today, and why Square Enix keeps adapting heroes from it for spinoff series like Dissidia Final Fantasy. It even got a raid in Final Fantasy 14, which culminates in a fight against Kefka, the iconic big bad of FF6 that rivals Sephiroth in terms of popularity.
Even without a remake, the legend of Final Fantasy 6 will live on for years to come. It's exactly why many argue that it doesn't need any bells and whistles, just more availability on modern platforms.
