Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford's romance didn't almost happened, and Eric Winters dishes on what led to his partnership with Melissa O'Neil on The Rookie. As an integral part of ABC's 2025 programming, the Alexi Hawley-created procedural started off as a John Nolan-centric show. However, as with the majority of long-runnings show on the small screen, The Rookie started diversifying its storytelling, resulting in other characters getting their time under the spotlight.
Overall, the project is one of the most-watched shows on network TV, and within that is the fans' devotion to following the romance between Chen and Bradford. The Rookie season 7 ended on a cliffhanger involving the pair, as they tried repairing their relationship. Luckily, instead of stretching out the plot, season 8 didn't waste time paying off all the set-up for their inevitable reconciliation. That said, long before they became The Rookie's main love line, the pair wasn't' even on the cards for the series.
Speaking with Good Housekeeping, Winter reveals that he credits the fans' interest in the partnership that led to Chenford's romance. Apparently, Hawley and his team weren't even considering a love plot between them, even reminding fans that originally, Lucy dated John. Over time, however, the creative team behind The Rookie recognized the public's intrigue and decided to give it a try. Read his full quote below:
“Well, the idea of Chenford was created by the fans. They were never written on the show—remember, Lucy dated [John] Nolan (Nathan Fillion) in the beginning! Even though Tim and Lucy were never structured to be a couple, the fans created the story in their minds that he’s a good guy and he’s broken and really cares about her. The fans built this into something that made the writers listen, and they crafted this amazing slow burn of a story.”
Tim and Lucy have gone through a lot, especially in the last couple of seasons. Admittedly, the power dynamic gap between them at the start of their romance was divisive, but The Rookie addressed that effectively, that it's barely an issue now. If anything, Bradford and Chen is the gold standard on network TV in terms of tackling such kind of stories. While there will definitely be challenges moving forward, the couple now stands on solid ground, that it's difficult to imagine them breaking up again.
Winter's comment also highlights the power of creative teams listening to its fan-base. While it shouldn't be the norm, especially at a time when people have varying opinions about pretty much everything, it's at least worth looking into instead of instantly shooting down an idea when it isn't part of the original blueprint. The pivot from Nolan to Bradford is arguably one of the most important creative decisions that Hawley and the writers have done on the show, given how vital Chenford is to The Rookie's success.
As Lucy and Tim continue to build a life on The Rookie season 8, it's curious if there's any wedding bells waiting for them at the end of the year. Currently, it's most natural nex step in their relationship, as they are already living together. If not, it's safe to say that it's only a matter of time before the milestone actually come to fruition.
The Rookie season 8 airs every Monday on ABC.
