Emperor Palpatine Unleashes the Death Star's Opposite, as Iconic Battle of Jakku Arrives

Disney's Star Wars canon has reached the pivotal Battle of Jakku the final battle between the Empire and the New Republic – and even from beyond the grave, Emperor Palpatine continues to put plans into motion that could destroy the fledgling new galactic government. As Marvel’s Star Wars comics have revealed, Jakku is a trap, long planned by the evil Emperor.

In a preview for Star Wars: The Battle of Jakku - Republic Under Siege (2024) #4 – written by Alex Segura and art by Stefano Reffaele – Mon Mothma meets with Princess Leia, Admiral Ackbar, Luke Skywalker, and Rynn Zenat to explain the dire state of the galaxy.

According to insider information from "The Operator," – who is really Counselor Gallius Rax trying to eliminate rival Imperial officers and manipulate the New Republic – confirms that the Empire is combining their forces in the hopes of landing one last crippling blow to the New Republic on the planet Jakku, setting the stage for the pivotal battle to come.

As it turns out, Emperor Palpatine had planned the Battle of Jakku since before he became chancellor of the Republic senate, and his plan included blowing the planet of Jakku up from the inside like a reverse Death Star. Star Wars' current comic series titled The Battle of Jakku is finally reaching its precipice, and Palpatine's plan is getting closer and closer to fruition as the iconic Battle of Jakku arrives. Emperor Palpatine's contingency was designed so that his empire would not outlive him, if he were to die prematurely.

Before Palpatine became chancellor of the Republic Senate, he began construction of an observatory on the planet Jakku, with a borehole inside leading directly to the planet's core. He also invested resources in the Unknown Regions. The next phase in the contingency was to gather the Empire and New Republic on Jakku, and wipe them all out by destroying the planet from the inside out, by dumping Sith relics down the borehole built. Gallius Rax, having carried out Palpatine's plan, was to then retreat to the Unknown Regions and build a new Empire for Palpatine to rule the galaxy again.

Jakku appears in the sequel films, and therefore was not destroyed in the Battle of Jakku, and the Empire was instead defeated at the hands of the New Republic. Gallius Rax was killed before he was able to fully carry out Palpatine's contingency, and instead, Rax directed Grand Admiral Sloane to take his place in the Unknown Regions. Sloane did as she was told and ended up building the First Order. Before all that can happen though, Rax has to lure the New Republic to Jakku.

Finally, in Marvel's Star Wars comics, the iconic Battle of Jakku is almost here, and the New Republic will have to defeat one more of Emperor Palpatine's plans to survive.

Gallius Rax's role as "The Operator" seems to be working quite well, as in the preview, Mon Mothma says that their source has been feeding them details about the remaining Imperial cells. Mon and the New Republic also have to deal with the threat of Governor Ubrik Adelhard before they can turn their attention to Jakku, but inside information from Reyna Oskure could prove that problem wrapped up quickly. Finally, in Marvel's Star Wars comics, the iconic Battle of Jakku is almost here, and the New Republic will have to defeat one more of Emperor Palpatine's plans to survive.
