Elle Fanning Explains Why She Created an OnlyFans Account
Elle Fanning isn’t afraid to embrace method acting.
In fact, the 27-year-old revealed she made an OnlyFans account to build the foundation of her role in Apple TV’s upcoming series Margo’s Got Money Troubles.
“There were a lot of things,” Elle told People in an interview published March 12. “Obviously, I am an Instagram user and a TikTok user. I got to look at that. Also, we had to dive into OnlyFans a little bit. We did create an account for the writer’s room, and for me, so I could check out how the website is.”
Her research is fitting, as her titular character in the show—adapted from Rufi Thorphe’s 2024 book of the same name—turns to the subscription-based platform known for hosting NSFW content to pay off her debt after she dropped out of college. However, her decision starts to affect her relationships with her loved ones, including parents Shayanne (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) and Jinx (Nick Offerman).
Though Margot’s life turns into a never-ending rollercoaster, the Maleficent actress, who also serves as a producer alongside Michelle, Nicole Kidman and David E. Kelly, admitted she enjoyed the ride.
“Margo is such a hopeful character,” she told Deadline last December. “She’s dealt these hardships in life, but somehow she always is able to overcome them. I think she was really inspiring to play because of that, and the world is just very specific and very fun.”
Elle continued of the series, which will release in April, “I hope people really enjoy the show. It’s a family drama, but it’s very heartwarming.”
This isn’t the first time the Sentimental Value star has detailed her approach in taking on a role. Whether she’s portraying a real-life reigning empress or an intimidating alien slayer, Elle has always found a certain beauty in this transformative process.
“I’ve always had a very big imagination and can just daydream for hours at a time,” she explained to Backstage in 2020. “I was always that way ever since I was super, super little. I feel a little bit like I’m being brought back to my childhood roots in that sense. I hope that I can always hold onto that because at the end of the day, we’re literally dressing up.”

The Harry Potter alum announced in March 2025 she had joined the platform to focus on very niche and non-sexual content.
"It's very much geared toward people who have an interest or fetish with hair,” Jessie said on her Before We Break Up Again podcast. “I really am choosing to think of this as an empowering moment for me because I have been this very straight, prim actress for a lot of my career and this is very much a way of me saying, 'Okay, I'm doing something that is not normal. This is weird and me and a bit kinky. And why not?’"

"I had heard of OnlyFans but I wasn't educated on what OnlyFans was and once I started to learn about it, I really think that the creators of the site really took the best of every platform of social media and put it into one site. You own your content. The other sites, they can sell your content."
