Nearly 17 years after Dyson first announced its Air Multiplier fans — one of its first big consumer products after vacuums — the company has miniaturized their design to create a handheld personal cooler called the HushJet Mini Cool. Like Dyson’s larger Air Multipliers, humidifiers, air purifiers, and heaters, the HushJet Mini Cool doesn’t have any visible spinning blades to nick fingers or get tangled up in clothing or jewelry. All of its moving parts are safely hidden away, which is important because, like Dyson’s hair dryers, the HushJet Mini Cool is made to be held.

A brushless 65,000rpm DC motor produces a blast of air at speeds of up to 55mph, but that can be turned down to maximize the HushJet Mini Cool’s battery life and make it run quieter. Dyson says the fan’s 5,000mAh rechargeable battery is good for up to six hours of use, and at its lowest setting it produces 52dBA of noise, which is roughly equivalent to the sound of a floor fan or air conditioner. At its highest setting, in Boost Mode, that jumps to 72.5dBA.

All of the HushJet’s Mini Cool’s components, including its motor and battery, are housed inside a cylindrical body that’s 38mm in diameter. That’s the same thickness as Dyson’s Supersonic r hair dryer, PencilVac, and PencilWash floor cleaner, and slimmer than a can of Red Bull. At the top of the HushJet Mini Cool is a nozzle that can be rotated to direct air straight upward, or at an angle. It’s reminiscent of the unpleasant business end of a sea lamprey, but its unique shape is designed to dampen higher-pitched frequencies so the fan is easier on the ears.

The HushJet Mini Cool will be available starting on April 9th for $99 in a stone/blush color option. In May Dyson will add a carnelian/sky (red) option, and in June an ink/cobalt (blue) version. At launch the fan will include accessories like a charger allowing the fan to stand on its own and a lanyard for wearing it hands-free hanging from your neck. Sometime in the summer Dyson plans to release additional accessories, including a stroller mount and a grip clip for attaching the fan to bag straps and jackets.
