Warning! This post contains a preview for Batman/Superman: World's Finest #48One of the most iconic superhero duos of all time, Batman and Superman have long been known as DC’s “World’s Finest.” However, the newest issue of their shared series is set to go in a much darker direction.

Rather than a new adventure starring The Dark Knight and Man of Steel, Mark Waid and Marcus To's World's Finest #49 will star their more twisted and dark dopplegangers from Earth-3: The Crime Syndicate's Owlman and Ultraman.

World's Finest #48 To Explore Owlman & Ultraman's Dark Relationship

In the new preview for Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #48, readers are taken to Earth-3 and a dark flashback to the origins of Thomas Wayne Jr. aka Owlman. Outside the Monarch Theater, Thomas' parents are similarly confronted by the mugger known as Joe Chill. Although Thomas Wayne Sr. pulls a gun on Chill, the gun is empty as his son had secretly taken out the bullets.

Chill then murders both parents before Thomas checks their pulses to make sure they're dead. The future Owlman then confirms that Chill will get half of his inheritance, confirming that he had orchestrated his own parents' deaths.

The preview then jumps to 20 years later, where Ultraman looks to be terrorizing civilians with his heat vision, confirming that this new issue will likely be giving us a warped version of the World’s Finest partnership on Earth-3.

A Dark Batman/Superman Mirror Before A Brand-New Showdown

With the following World's Finest #49 set to feature both duos clashing on Earth-3 after Batman and Superman find themselves trapped in their much darker world, this week's issue looks to be focusing directly on Owlman and Ultraman, exploring their shared dynamic as the dark inverse of the classic World's Finest duo.

As a result, it's going to be very exciting to learn more about their dark partnership in World's Finest #48, as well as their imminent brawl with Batman and Superman themselves.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest #48 releases February 18th from DC Comics.
