Dave Coulier revealed he’s in remission after undergoing treatment for tongue cancer. The “Full House” actor first shared his diagnosis in December, nearly a year after he beat Stage 3 non-Hodgkin Lymphoma.
“It’s been a roller coaster ride for sure,” Coulier, 66, said during a Wednesday appearance on “Good Morning America.” “I’m in remission with both cancers. And what a journey this has been.”
Coulier was diagnosed with P16 squamous carcinoma, a type of head and neck cancer, when doctors noticed a flare-up on the base of his tongue during a routine check-up and PET scan. (Doctors told him the tongue cancer was “totally unrelated” to his recent bout with lymphoma.) Coulier assured fans in December that his prognosis was far better — “a 90% curability rate” — than his first cancer treatment. He underwent 35 rounds of radiation, which were completed on Dec. 31.
Coulier said his back-to-back cancer journey has inspired him to push others to stay on top of their health, adding that “even though I’m in remission, I feel like cancer is always in the rearview mirror.”
“I never wanted to be the poster boy for cancer, believe me,” Coulier said to “Good Morning America” host Robin Roberts. “But now I feel like I can encourage [people] to get prostate exams and mammograms. Talk to your doctors.”
Coulier said his wife, Melissa Bring, and “Full House” co-star John Stamos were instrumental in keeping up his spirits through treatment.
“John flew into Michigan, came and visited us, and made me laugh. He’s my brother. He wore a bald cap and when he came around the corner dressed like that, I dropped to the floor laughing,” Coulier said. “He got COVID while he was staying with us, so we were like two fifth graders sitting in the hallway, talking to each other with walkie talkies. We’re very mature.”
