Few Star Wars villains have experienced a journey as dark and unexpected as Darth Maul. Literally too stubborn to die the first time, Maul's history extends well beyond his debut appearance in 1999's The Phantom Menace.
With the brand-new Maul - Shadow Lord series on the way, it's good to look back at Maul's full history in the Star Wars timeline thus far. Here's our complete breakdown of Darth Maul's history, from Sith apprentice to dark side rogue to crime lord (including what we should expect in his upcoming Star Wars series).
Darth Maul's Training As Darth Sidious' Apprentice (And First Major Defeat)
Born on Dathomir, Maul was molded into a weapon of the dark side by Darth Sidious from a very young age. Enduring brutal training for years, Maul became Palpatine's first apprentice, becoming devoted to the Sith Grand Plan with an insatiable bloodlust for killing Jedi, so much so that there were times when Maul's ambition nearly exposed the Sith before the time was right.
However, Darth Maul finally emerged in 1999's The Phantom Menace, his first and most significant live-action appearance. Tasked with hunting down Queen Padmé Amidala, Maul was confronted by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn and his apprentice, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Although Qui-Gon was slain by Maul, the Sith apprentice was defeated by Kenobi after the Jedi cut his legs from his torso before Maul plummeted down a reactor shaft on Naboo. However, Maul's story did not end there.
Darth Maul's Revival During The Clone Wars
About a decade later, Maul was found alive on the trash world of Lotho Minor in the midst of the Clone Wars, having survived his fall through sheer will and the power of the dark side itself.
Discovered by his brother Savage Oppress, the crazed Maul was taken back to Dathomir to have his mind restored by the Nightsisters' Mother Talizin, who also gave him new cybernetic legs to replace the terrifying mechanical spider body he'd fashioned for himself during his dark exile.
Seeking revenge on those who had wronged him, Maul took Savage as his new apprentice, carving a path of death and destruction across the galaxy to gain the attention of Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the midst of their confrontations, Maul believed he and Savage were the true Sith, hence his decision to build a base of power to rival his former master and Count Dooku as well.
Maul's Shadow Collective And The Siege of Mandalore
Creating a Shadow Collective of crime syndicates, Maul seized control of the Mandalorian Death Watch from Pre Vizsla, killing their leader and claiming the legendary Mandalorian Darksaber. Staging a hostile takeover of the Mandalorian government, Maul also killed Duchess Satine Kryze to torment Kenobi.
However, Maul and Savage were ultimately attacked by Darth Sidious himself, who came to Mandalore to personally deal with his new rivals. After killing Savage, Sidious took Maul as his prisoner, though his former apprentice was ultimately rescued by the Death Watch.
Returning to Mandalore by the end of the Clone Wars, Maul hoped to face Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, knowing that Skywalker was key to Sidious' plans. Instead, Maul was met by Ahsoka Tano and the 332nd Legion, as Kenobi and Skywalker had been called upon to rescue Palpatine (the opening of Revenge of the Sith).
Despite defeating Maul and taking him prisoner after the Siege of Mandalore, Ahskoa freed Maul during the chaos of Order 66, needing him to serve as a distraction while she saved Captain Rex. As a result, Maul escaped into the galactic underworld as his former master's plans came to fruition with the rise of the Galactic Empire.
Shadow Lord Will Finally Reveal Maul's Dark Times Journey
During the Dark Times, we know that Maul was operating in secret while the Empire was consolidating its new rule over the galaxy. However, the details have long been a mystery. Now, 2026's new Shadow Lord series will be set during this era, one year after the end of the Clone Wars.
Based on the recent trailer, we should expect to see how Maul evaded the Empire and its Imperial Inquisitors, as well as how he formed the major crime syndicate Crimson Dawn. It's also been teased that Maul will find himself a new apprentice, who may be a canonical version of Legends' Darth Talon.
Darth Maul Leading Crimson Dawn (Lady Qi'ra Became His Second-In-Command)
By the time of Solo: A Star Wars Story (Maul's second live-action appearance), Maul was ruling Crimson Dawn from the shadows of Dathomir, using proxies to publicly lead the organization. He also forged various schemes and plans to rival his old master, though none ever came to full fruition.
The end of Solo confirmed that Lady Qi'ra was recruited as Maul's new second-in-command, and canonical comics set during the Galactic Civil War confirm she fully took over Crimson Dawn after Maul left.
Not only was Qira trained in new forms of combat by Maul, but she would also carry out one of his schemes to bring down Palpatine and Darth Vader between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. While she nearly succeeded, Qi'ra's master plan from Maul ultimately failed.
Darth Maul Encounters Ezra Bridger on Malachor
In Star Wars Rebels, just before the start of the original trilogy, Maul resurfaces on Malachor, claiming to have been in exile after crash-landing on the ancient Sith world.
Seeking ancient Sith knowledge, Maul attempted to manipulate young Jedi Ezra Bridger into becoming his new apprentice. Although he ultimately failed in that endeavor, Maul still used Ezra to help him find Obi-Wan Kenobi in his exile on Tatooine, having been obsessed with killing his nemesis for decades.
Maul's Quest For Revenge & Final Duel With Obi-Wan Kenobi
With Ezra's help, Maul used the combined power of Jedi and Sith holocrons to find Kenobi on Tatooine. To that end, their final confrontation in the desert was brief and yet incredibly profound. Obi-Wan ended this final duel with Maul in seconds, using a technique inspired by Qui-Gon’s death decades earlier, speaking to their years of history.
Mortally wounded, Maul asked if the one Kenobi was protecting was the Chosen One, and Obi-Wan confirmed that he believed Luke Skywalker was. In his final moments, Maul seemingly found some small bit of peace with the knowledge that Luke would avenge both himself and Kenobi with the defeat of the Sith.
When looking at the full scope of his history, Darth Maul is easily one of the most fascinating and tragic characters in the Star Wars galaxy, and it's going to be very exciting to learn more about his journey when Shadow Lord begins streaming in just a few months.
