Sony’s Crunchyroll is looking to deepen the moviegoing demographics on the first weekend of summer with anime fans with the release of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Tears of the Azure Sea on May 1.
The second film in the Slime franchise will go up against 20th Century Studio’s The Devil Wears Prada 2, Neon’s horror movie Hokum and Angel Studio’s Animal Farm.
The anime series That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime debuted in 2018, and it’s based on a bestselling manga and light novel series which has sold over 56M copies. Slime follows an ordinary man reborn as a powerful slime in a fantastical world. As Rimuru Tempest, he builds a nation of peace and unity, blending epic adventures, world-building, and heartfelt storytelling. The pic is an original standalone side-story that takes place following the events of Season 3 of the anime series, which is available to watch on Crunchyroll. Season 4 will stream on April 3, 2026.
The first film, That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond, is an original standalone side-story set after the events of season 2. Pic was released theatrically in all major global Crunchyroll/Sony-distributed markets, excluding Asian territories, in January 2023 (was originally released in Japan in 2022). That movie grossed $14.6MWW ($2.5M in North America).

A ten-minute sneak peek of Tears of the Azure Sea will be screened at Crunchyroll’s monthly North American theatrical Anime Nights program showing of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond (2023 – the first film in the anime franchise) on April 20, 2026.
