James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.
Red Dead Redemption 2 was such a sprawling and deep experience when it released back in 2018, that it was clear that it had all the ingredients needed to keep the community entertained for years to come.
Even if you don't try to 100% the game, you can spend hours just traversing the world on your horse, without really doing anything useful that progresses the story.
As such, it's not too surprising that talk didn't really turn to a sequel until years later, with many still happy to carry on playing the second game, even all these years later. That said, conversations about a third game are becoming more common, and a lot of those are about who fans would like to see as the protagonist.
Who Should Star In Red Dead Redemption 3?
Rockstar GamesOver on Reddit, fans took to the forums to discuss who they would like to see in the main role, next time Red Dead Redemption comes back around for another go in the Wild West.
Whilst there were a ton of suggestions, including just fielding someone entirely new, there were several characters that kept showing up as potentially popular choices.
"If it follows an existing character, then 1000% Sadie. Preferably her own adventures after RDR2 and not involving a strong tie to John's stuff or Dutch's gang. Just her doing her own stuff," one comment read.
"I wouldn't mind a game with any of these characters. Also wouldn't mind another prequel where Arthur and John are younger and 1st under the care of Dutch. Up to the Blackwater incident," another added.
Others were more general, with one very popular idea being to take the timeline back significantly. "They need to go back in time a bit. During the golden age of the Wild West. I want to play a character in charge of a gang where all of my choices and consequences matter," one said.
We Still Have GTA 6 To Come
Rockstar GamesWith all of that fun speculation in mind, it's important to remember that all of Rockstar's eggs are very much in the GTA VI basket right now. The success of that game is critical to the studio's future, and they'll be focusing 100% of their energy on that, likely for a few years to come yet.
That unfortunately means that we'll likely be without another entry in the beloved cowboy series for a while. In the meantime, we'll just have to carry on plugging away at Red Dead Redemption 2, which remains a brilliant game.
