An experienced Editor representing Canada via Screen Rant's Team Anime, J.R. has been reading manga since the first printing of Shonen Jump in North America. This passion drove him to write about anime, manga, and manhwa since 2022, having recently served as Lead Anime Editor for ComicBook.com.
His favorite moments in media coverage include reviewing the series premieres of Zom 100 and Bleach: TYBW Part 2 back-to-back and briefly meeting Junji Ito at a VIZ gallery event in 2023.
There's just something about handsome white-haired anime men stealing the hearts of the fandom time and time again, with Crunchyroll seemingly there to catch each new wave. For some, the obsession began with Psycho-Pass' Shogo Makishima, and for others, it was Satoru Gojo of Jujutsu Kaisen. But Witch Hat Atelier presents a softer, more fatherly alternative.
Witch Hat Atelier, BUG FILMS' new anime set to release on April 6, 2026, will soon introduce fans to the lovable Coco as she gets pulled into the world of witches. But truly, much like with Gojo and other anime ikemen of the past, a large portion of the fandom will instead be more drawn to her caring teacher and master witch, Qifrey.
Witch Hat Atelier Presents a New Charming Character Sure to Appeal to Gojo Fans
Qifrey appears in the first chapter and episode of Witch Hat Atelier, an elegantly-dressed young man with wavy white hair, a bright blue eye, and distinctive glasses covering his other. Beyond becoming Coco's gateway to a world of magic, Qifrey's kind exterior conceals a wounded past, largely hidden away from Coco as she joins his other students.
In a way, it's almost perfect that Jujutsu Kaisen season 3 part 1 finishes just as Witch Hat Atelier begins to wind up. Fans may find themselves disappointed by how long it'll take for Gojo to return, and it's hardly a "Gojo at home" situation. Witch Hat Atelier is a gorgeous seinen manga, with the lofty promise of a strong adaptation from BUG FILMS.

Witch Hat Atelier returns with a flourish, confirming a release window along with a whole new look at the series.
However, Qifrey seems notably more measured than his white-haired sorcerer counterpart. Instead of a cocky, near-invincible teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High, Qifrey bears a permanent reminder of his vulnerabilities against Atelier's central villains.
Qifrey is notably less cruel overall to his enemies, but as is the case with the Brimmed Hats faction, he's not above holding a grudge against the magical anarchists of Witch Hat Atelier. Until Gojo makes his eventual return, though, the reign of Qifrey, joining a long line of trustworthy, iconic teachers, may soon commence.
Qifrey Is the Latest Iconic Anime Teacher Fans Will Fall in Love with
What makes Witch Hat Atelier so magical is how carefully he approaches each of his students and their magical learning needs. He has his own oddball quirks, too, such as mastering certain magic specifically to prevent ever getting himself wet. But the moment Qifrey realizes Coco could be his key to drawing out the Brimmed Hats, the story takes off.
Qifrey is just another of multiple beloved anime teachers, imparting sage brotherly advice like Iruka Umino; to disheveled heartthrobs like Shota Aizawa; to Assassination Classroom's incomparable Koro-sensei. While Qifrey may conceal motives of his own from Coco, none are harmful towards his beloved students.
While Qifrey may conceal motives of his own from Coco, none are harmful towards his beloved students.
Without spoiling too much, though, it's important to note how dedicated Qifrey is to protecting his students, while leaving room for improvement in his teaching style. Agott believes he could be doing a better job, his gentle style sometimes grates against Richeh's expectations, and Tetia, among others, doesn't appear to have issues with him.
Anime fans deserve more sweet, complex teacher characters to follow beyond Qifrey. Olruggio makes a strong foil to Qifrey's more relaxed approach, while future additions like Hieheart represent a stark, boisterous contrast to Qifrey.
Teachers are essential to the core of Witch Hat Atelier's anime as a coming-of-age story, where Coco must learn its intricate magic system to save her mother. But in subtly presenting their flaws alongside their more obvious positive qualities, this new Crunchyroll anime may ease the pain of waiting however long as necessary for Gojo's return to Jujutsu Kaisen.
