Crimson Desert is so close to launch right now that we can practically smell the mud off Kliff's soggy boots...eew! But us gamers have been burned too many times before and there's still one giant looming question hovering over its release. From Crimson Desert's showcase trailers to actual gameplay footage, we've seen the game running buttery smooth but only on PC and more recently, the PS5 Pro.
Thanks to Digital Foundry, we've gotten an in-depth look at how the game runs on high-end PCs and the powerful PS5 Pro. Everything from frame rates, particle effects, draw distance and lighting have been studied under a microscope and the game looks amazing on both platforms. But, if you're an average Joe like me, you're planning on playing Crimson Desert on a base PS5 and are starting to feel a little bit nervous. No base PS5 footage exists yet and the game launches later this week!
Console Gamers Are Concerned About Crimson Desert
Will It Run Well On Console?
Features Trailer ScreenshotWe've been here before. If you're old enough, you might remember the disastrous launches of Ubisoft games like Assassin's Creed Unity and Watch Dogs. What we got compared to what we were promised was miles away from our expectations. More recently, Cyberpunk 2077 wouldn't even run on PS4 at launch without crashing every five minutes. Crimson Desert already seems to perform much better on PC than PS5 Pro and not seeing any results on the base PS5 has us all very nervous.
When quizzed about the game's performance on console, the developers responded with the following:
Regardless of what we say, people probably won’t believe us. So, instead, we’re sending the game to Digital Foundry, and they’ll have a full analysis of performance across all the platforms at launch.
The only problem with this statement is that, up until now, we've only seen footage from PC and PS5 Pro, and we're still waiting to see the game running on the base PS5. Perhaps the team at Pearl Abyss will share footage before launch, but that window is getting pretty small at this point.
When Will We See Crimson Desert On A Base PS5?
Any Chance Before Launch?
It's not looking good for base PS5 fans who are hoping to get a glimpse of the game running before launch. Digital Foundry were not given access to the game on base PS5 and, unless Pearl Abyss themselves decide to show it off, we're very much left wondering until launch on 19th March 2026. With the game running on the brand new BlackSpace Engine, we really have no idea what to expect. Certainly, the lack of transparency feels worrying.
The upside, at least, is that we won't have long to wait. With March 19th only a few days away, we'll soon know for better or worse how well Crimson Desert performs on a standard console. The hype is already reaching Elden Ring levels, which interestingly enough has new content launching on the same day. Let's optimistically hope that it's a home run for the team at Pearl Abyss. We've seen plenty of games that were broken at launch...we don't need to see one more!
