Robert De Niro's crime thriller is back, and now Christian Bale has been added to the cast for the upcoming and long-awaited sequel, Heat 2.

The rumored cast for the sequel, that's taken 31 years, includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Austin Butler, Bale, Adam Driver, Ana de Armas, and returning for the second movie is Al Pacino. The original Heat was released in 1995, and follows Neil McCauley (played by De Niro), who's a professional thief and hopes to pull off one last heist before he retires. However, Lt. Vincent Hanna (played by Pacino) is hot on his tail.

According to Fox News reporter Jake Hamilton, it was confirmed that Bale would be joining the cast of Heat 2, and filming would commence soon. Hamilton shared the update on X with the caption, "Christian Bale just told me: 'I'll be back in Chicago soon for HEAT 2!'" It was reported in November 2025 that Bale was circling a lead role in Michael Mann's sequel. Mann and Bale would be working together for the first time in 17 years after the 2009 crime thriller Public Enemies.

Heat 2 is based on Mann's novel released in 2022, which acts as a prequel and sequel to the original movie. It is said to explore Pacino's character, Lt. Vincent Hanna, in his early days as a detective, as well as the two criminals of the story, Neil McCauley and Chris Shiherlis, before the 1995 movie, but also what happened after the movie's ending. It is rumored DiCaprio will be up for the role as Shiherlis, originally played by Val Kilmer, but it hasn't been confirmed who Bale will portray.

1995's Heat has incredible reviews with an impressive 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and was considered highly successful. The movie helped solidify De Niro's career as a terrific crime actor, as well as establishing the great on-screen chemistry between him and Al Pacino. Heat grossed over $187 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It wasn't regarded as an instant blockbuster, but over time became a cult classic and is recognized as an influential crime film.

With the update from Bale, filming in Chicago is expected to begin soon, and at the time of writing, there is no official release date for the long-awaited sequel. However, it is likely Heat 2 will be arriving sometime in 2027.
