‘Challengers,’ ‘The Substance’ and ‘Wicked’ Land Costume Designers Guild Nominations: Full List

The Costume Designers Guild has announced nominations for the 27th Costume Designers Guild Awards, with “Wicked,” “Gladiator 2,” “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and “Dune: Part Two” among the titles landing nominations.

The costume designers behind “The Book of Clarence,” “Gladiator II,” “Maria,” “Nosferatu” and
“Saturday Night” will vie for the top prize in excellence in period film, while the artisans behind “Challengers,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez,” “The Fall Guy ” and “The Substance” will compete for excellence in contemporary costume.

“Wicked’s” Paul Tazewell is nominated in the excellence in sci-fi/fantasy film category. This is his fifth guild nomination. He won in 2021 for “Hamilton” in the excellence in variety, reality-competition or live television category. Tazewell has emerged as a frontrunner for the costuming Oscar. If he does so, he will make history as the first Black man to win that category.

For “Wicked,” Tazewell anchored Cynthia Erivo’s Elphaba and Ariana Grande’s Glinda in opposing looks. When audiences first meet Glinda, she’s floating over Munchkinland in her pink bubble dress. Later, when Elphaba is introduced, she’s wearing black. Those opposing colors remain consistent throughout the film. Tazewell paid homage to both the Broadway musical that the movie is based on, and “The Wizard of Oz” film in his designs by inserting subtle easter eggs.

“Gladiator 2” costume designer Janty Yates landed her fifth guild nomination — she has never won at the guild, though she won an Oscar in 2000 for her work on “Gladiator.”

On the film’s sequel, she worked with David Crossman to build the looks. Her focus was on Denzel Washington’s Macrinus and Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla. For Washington’s wealthy power broker, she draped him in rich imported fabrics such as silk and decorated him in jewelry.

Other costume designers nominated include this year’s Variety creative impact in costume design honoree, Colleen Atwood for “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” Massimo Cantini Parrini for “Maria,” Linda Muir for “Nosferatu” and Jonathan Anderson for “Challengers.”

“Challengers” was Anderson’s first foray into film costume design. Anderson is the creative director of Loewe and has his own fashion label JW Anderson. He dressed his preppy tennis players (Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist) in trendy tennis brands, Juicy Couture zip-up hoodies and in one scene gave Tashi (Zendaya) Chanel espadrilles to wear as she watches a match on center court.

On the TV side, the costume designers behind “Baby Reindeer,” “Shōgun, “Dune Prophecy” and “Agatha All Along” were nominated.

“I am thrilled to congratulate all the nominees for this year’s CDGA. Your exceptional creativity
and dedication continue to elevate the art of costume design. We look forward to celebrating your
incredible achievements on this magical evening. Best wishes to each nominee,” said Terry
Gordon, president of the Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892.

The CDGA ceremony will take place on Feb. 6, at The Ebell of Los Angeles. Winners in the nine categories will be announced live at the event.

Western Costume returns as a Premiere Sponsor of the 27th CDGA. The host, presenters and
additional sponsors and honorees will be announced in the coming weeks.
