Ryan O'Rourke is a Senior News Writer at Collider with a specific interest in all things adult animation, video game adaptations, and the work of Mike Flanagan. He is also an experienced baseball writer with over six years of articles between multiple outlets, most notably FanSided's CubbiesCrib. Whether it's taking in a baseball game, a new season of Futurama or Castlevania: Nocturne, or playing the latest From Software title, he is always finding ways to show his fandom. When it comes to gaming and anything that takes inspiration from it, he is deeply opinionated on what's going on. Outside of entertainment, he's a graduate of Eureka College with a Bachelor's in Communication where he honed his craft as a writer. Between The IV Leader at Illinois Valley Community College and The Pegasus at Eureka, he spent the majority of his college career publishing articles on everything from politics to campus happenings and, of course, entertainment for the student body. Those principles he learned covering the 2020 election, Palestine, and so much more are brought here to Collider, where he has gleefully written on everything from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes to Nathan Lane baby-birding sewer boys.

Captain Marvel's fate in the MCU is a bit up in the air at the moment. Heading into the franchise's next big crossover film, Avengers: Doomsday, she has yet to be confirmed for the superhero blockbuster or its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. Given that Samuel L. Jackson recently revealed he'll be donning the eyepatch as Nick Fury once again next year, it's fair to assume Brie Larson won't be far behind him after they shared the screen in The Marvels. So far, though, the actress has been tight-lipped about her return, and there's been little in terms of official casting for Anthony and Joe Russo's second of two new Marvel outings.

While fans wait for answers there, The Cosmic Avenger is about to see new life on the page. Marvel Comics' new Editor-in-Chief, Stephen Wacker, hosted his first Bullpen Bulletins! panel at New York Comic Con this afternoon and revealed that a new series centered on Carol Danvers is coming soon for readers. The award-winning G. Willow Wilson, previously known for her writing with Black Cat and Ms. Marvel, will join renowned Fantastic Four artist Rachael Stott for a new ongoing run with the all-powerful hero that will hit store shelves starting next May. This Captain Marvel will be broken out from Chip Zdarsky and Marco Checchetto's current Avengers run.

In the aftermath of Avengers: Armageddon, readers will follow Carol as she finds herself at a personal low. To bounce back to her former heroic heights, she "will have to challenge everything she thought she knew about being Captain Marvel—and break every rule along the way." Her comeback won't be unimpeded, though. In the background, a new threat that's quietly been amassing power in the shadows of the Marvel universe is nearly ready to step into the light, and she'll have to be at full power to take it on. Wilson expressed her anticipation to take flight with Captain Marvel once more in an official statement, writing:

“I’m so excited to be returning to these characters who I love so much, these readers who I love so much, and to be taking Carol on her next big adventure. I can’t wait to get started and for fans to see what we have in store for Carol and all her friends. So chin up, put your boots on. We’re going back up!”

'Captain Marvel's New Writer Is a Perfect Fit for the Character

Wilson has an extensive resume as a comic book scribe both with and beyond Marvel Comics. Notably, she's one of the co-creators of Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Khan, alongside Wacker, and served as the writer for her relaunch from 2014 through early 2019. The first volume even won a Hugo Award for Best Graphic Story. Across her career, Wilson has also been a six-time Eisner Award nominee, taking home her lone accolade for her original comic The Invisible Kingdom at Dark Horse Comics. Her most recent efforts include the current Black Cat run at Marvel and the ongoing Poison Ivy series for DC Comics, which began in 2022. With so much experience under her belt with Carol through Ms. Marvel, the writer is about as well-equipped to take on the high-flying hero as anyone, and Stott is eager to work with one of her idols.

“So unbelievably thrilled to not only be working with one of my favorite writers, the amazing G. Willow Wilson, but also one of my absolute favorite characters. At times like these, as an artist you really have to pinch yourself, and assume that in a previous life you saved a busload of orphans from an escaped tiger to get so lucky. Can't wait to help bring this exciting new chapter of Carol's story to life!”

The new Captain Marvel comic series launches in May. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on the latest developments from Marvel Comics.
