As it launches into season 2, Boston Blue's story has been in flux. CBS' successful Blue Bloods spinoff ended season 1 with a massive cliffhanger: Detective Brian Rodgers (Ryan Broussard) was in a devastating car accident, leaving his fate in the balance throughout the hiatus. Thankfully, showrunners Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier have an update on what's to come in season 2.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Margolis and Sonnier explained that Boston Blue season 2 will use a time jump to mitigate the immediate aftermath of the accident, with the series "picking up with our characters about the same amount of time that we've been off the air."
While the accident's immediate intensity will have subsided, Margolis said Brian's fate will be "very front and center" in the Boston Blue season 2 premiere. While the series will skip the gory details, the accident won't be a thread that falls away quickly.
Margolis: Well, the answer is all of the above. There is a time jump, because we are picking up with our characters about the same amount of time that we've been off the air, but we do immediately get into the answers about who was driving the truck? What happened to Brian? Why it happened? Who was responsible, and what else it could lead to? That is very front and center in the premiere episode. So, while I cannot tell you at this time what Brian's fate was, I can promise you will find out very quickly within the first episode.
Sonnier added that Brian's accident will have a lasting impact on the season as a whole. "The investigation into what happened to Brian is actually the hook into the larger story that drives us through season 2," the co-showrunner revealed, explaining that the outcome won't just weave into the investigation, but into the show's larger stories as well. Boston Blue will touch on Brian's accident and its broader implications throughout the rest of the season, both in the procedural and family-drama sense.
Sonnier: The investigation into what happened to Brian is actually the hook into the larger story that drives us through season 2, in both the police procedure and a big investigation that our people all embark on. But also in the family stories, both that we've set up in season 1, and new family stories that grow in season 2.
With the investigation into Brian's accident serving as an entry point to a larger story, it's clear Boston Blue won't let go of the fallout easily. Rather than brushing it aside as other procedurals might, the Blue Bloods spinoff's choice to dive into the accident and let it fuel the larger story is interesting, as it delays the resolution and stretches out the drama.
Brian's case could be the season's focal point, or its resolution could lead into a completely different story and open the door to something even bigger. Whatever Boston Blue chooses to do with its cliffhanger resolution, the fact that whatever comes next will build into something that keeps informing the series is what keeps Blue Bloods' successful spinoff forging ahead.
