While he's known for his many comedic roles, along with directing and producing Apple TV's Severance, Stiller is also an enthusiastic Knicks fan, and frequently discusses them on X. On June 13, the Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, and it is their first championship in 53 years and their third in franchise history, making this a particularly exciting time for the team's supporters.
On X, Stiller has now revealed that he is making a documentary with A24 and HBO about the New York Knicks' championship season. The actor and filmmaker shared that he "couldn’t be more excited to make this doc with @a24 and @HBO about the NY Knicks!!!!!! #LETSGOKNICKS."
According to Sports Illustrated, Stiller was previously rumored to be making a documentary about the Knicks, as he was seen filming various moments throughout the playoffs on his iPhone. He also posted select clips of what he filmed on X and teased that they were "part of a bigger project." Only days after the Knicks won the NBA Finals, he has now confirmed what the project is and that A24 and HBO are on board as well.
Along with Severance, Stiller has previously directed The Cable Guy, Zoolander, Tropic Thunder, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Zoolander 2, and numerous episodes of the Showtime series Escape at Dannemora. Other projects that he has produced but not directed include Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Megamind, Why Him?, and In the Dark.
He also has experience directing and producing a documentary, which he did about his parents, Jerry Stiller and Ann Meara. Stiller & Meara: Nothing is Lost's reviews were overwhelmingly positive, leading to a "Certified Fresh" 93% critics' score and a 77% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. In ScreenRant's review, Gregory Nussen gave the documentary seven out of 10 stars and wrote that "Stiller may be going for something else: bare honesty, filtered through the notion that any and all recorded moments are potentially valuable."
As seen by the frequent filming of the Knicks on his iPhone, the emphasis on all recorded moments being valuable already seems to be true for the documentary. Thanks to being a longtime and diehard fan, this is poised to be another deeply personal project for Stiller, albeit in a very different way from looking back at his parents and their iconic legacies.
