Following a highly successful second season that drew millions of dedicated viewers, this British detective drama has now secured a top spot on an all-time favorite list. The series, set in Cambridge, England, centers on a professional word puzzle creator who goes undercover as his missing detective twin. While investigating his brother's disappearance, he realizes that legal mysteries are essentially puzzles, and he is uniquely qualified to solve them. Season 2 picks up directly where Season 1 ended, with him tackling impossible crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority.

Ludwig, starring David Mitchell as the eponymous John "Ludwig" Taylor, debuted on BBC One on September 25, 2024, to highly positive reviews that continued into Season 2. The show was renewed for a third season before Season 2 even aired, but no premiere date has been announced. Meanwhile, a Christmas special is scheduled for this December, starring Poirot legend David Suchet alongside Jason Flemyng, Joe Wilkinson, Cathy Tyson, Alexandra Roach, and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.

As fans eagerly anticipate Ludwig's return, the dramedy remains a top chart performer. Based on Barb data from overnights.tv reported via Deadline, the British series has become the most-watched U.K. scripted show of the year across both broadcasters and streaming platforms. The first episode of Season 2 attracted 9.1 million viewers last month, while the finale drew 1.6 million overnight viewers. The mystery series also posted even stronger catch-up numbers on BBC iPlayer.

Given its success, the BBC series now ranks above other major British hits like The Night Manager Season 2, with 8.7 million viewers, and the BBC comedy-drama Small Prophets, with 7.6 million viewers. However, on the unscripted front, Ludwig cannot compete with The Traitors from earlier this year, which attracted a consolidated audience of 13.3 million.

Of course, this isn't Ludwig's first big impact; its Season 1 premiere was the top-rated scripted series launch of 2024, drawing nearly 10 million viewers in its first month and becoming the BBC's largest new scripted series since 2022. The season also holds a Certified Fresh 97% critics' rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Season 2 of Ludwig, besides Mitchell, saw the return of fan-favorite characters including Maxwell Martin as Ludwig's sister-in-law and close friend Lucy; Dipo Ola as DCI Russell Carter; Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor; Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw; Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler; and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.

Ludwig is available to watch on BritBox. Stay tuned to Collider for more information.
