Baz Luhrmann has been teasing the possibility of an Elvis Presley stage musical for a few years, but the director of 2022’s Elvis and the current EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert now is sounding more sure of the prospect.
In an interview with the UK’s Magic Radio, Luhrmann, asked about the possibility of a stage adaptation of Presley’s story, confidently says: “It’s being worked on. It’s happening.”
“I don’t know if I was supposed to announce it,” he adds, “but, hey, I just did.”
Luhrmann says in the interview — watch it below — that he will not direct the musical. “I have this thing I’ve learned. It’s like, I got Alex Timbers to do the Moulin Rouge musical. I can never go backwards. I can’t be me when I was 28 doing Romeo + Juliet or Strictly Ballroom … but I really love handing it on, and I’m not precious.”
A production timeline, casting or creative team was not announced.
Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic starred Austin Butler as Presley and Tom Hanks as his manager Colonel Tom Parker. It was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture but did not win any. The 2026 concert film EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert is currently screening in Imax theaters and gets a general release February 27 from Neon and Universal Pictures.
