The horror film Backrooms hasn't even been released yet, but the director is already thinking ahead to the future.

"I think there's a number of things I'm looking at right now. Backrooms, I would have a very hard time saying it's done. I guess that's what I can say, but I expect to be seeing a little bit more in the not-so-distant future."

The movie is based on the web series of the same name that Parsons created on YouTube. The filmmaker debuted Backrooms in 2022 and drew in tens of millions of views, with the most recent episode released in February 2025. Not only did Parsons create the series, but he also wrote the scripts, directed the episodes and served as composer and animator.

Three years ago, A24 began developing Backrooms as a film, with Parsons resuming his role as director. Instead of writing the screenplay, though, Homeland and Westworld writer Will Soodik was hired for the job. A24 is best known for producing movies like Ex Machina, Room, Moonlight, Lady Bird, Uncut Gems, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Whale, The Brutalist and Marty Supreme, with some of these films winning big at the Oscars.

Aside from Backrooms, Parsons has also worked on other web series like Attack on Titan and The Oldest View, and shorts like Late for School, It's Nicer Here and Transmission Server. The upcoming Backrooms film marks the first time he's directed a feature-length project.

There are several major names both in front of and behind the camera of Backrooms. The Conjuring creator James Wan and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy are among the producers, along with Michael Clear, Roberto Patino, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, Osgood Perkins, Chris Ferguson, Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kori Adelson.

In front of the camera, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who's an Oscar and Golden Globe nominee for his performance in 12 Years a Slave, plays the lead role of a furniture store owner named Clark, who discovers another dimension filled with eerie, yellow-colored backrooms and fluorescent lighting. He comes back every night since discovering it and realizes there's even more to uncover. He tries telling his therapist, Dr. Mary Kline, about the situation, and she eventually makes an attempt to find Clark.

Ejiofor's co-stars in Backrooms are Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Lukita Maxwell, Finn Bennett and Avan Jogia.

Backrooms will be released in theaters on Friday, May 29, 2026.
