Ryan O'Rourke is a Senior News Writer at Collider with a specific interest in all things adult animation, video game adaptations, and the work of Mike Flanagan. He is also an experienced baseball writer with over six years of articles between multiple outlets, most notably FanSided's CubbiesCrib. Whether it's taking in a baseball game, a new season of Futurama or Castlevania: Nocturne, or playing the latest From Software title, he is always finding ways to show his fandom. When it comes to gaming and anything that takes inspiration from it, he is deeply opinionated on what's going on. Outside of entertainment, he's a graduate of Eureka College with a Bachelor's in Communication where he honed his craft as a writer. Between The IV Leader at Illinois Valley Community College and The Pegasus at Eureka, he spent the majority of his college career publishing articles on everything from politics to campus happenings and, of course, entertainment for the student body. Those principles he learned covering the 2020 election, Palestine, and so much more are brought here to Collider, where he has gleefully written on everything from the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes to Nathan Lane baby-birding sewer boys.

Season 2 of Apple TV's sleek mystery thriller The Last Thing He Told Me is now entering its back half, and everything has been turned on its head for Hannah (Jennifer Garner), Bailey (Angourie Rice), and Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). The goal of the series' sophomore outing, set five years after the events of Season 1, was for the family to finally find a way to reunite and outrun their past. Any hopes of that just became nearly impossible in Episode 4, however, with the death of their constant ally, U.S. Marshal Grady Bradford (Augusto Aguilera), and the loss of all the evidence he was collecting. With years of progress undone in an instant, Episode 5, "First-Date Material," will put the parents on a new lead in Houston, while Bailey reaches out to her late mother's best friend.

Ahead of the premiere on Friday, Collider can exclusively share a new sneak peek at the upcoming episode that centers on Bailey as she asks a very sensitive question of her mother's friend, Quinn, played by new Season 2 addition Judy Greer. The footage opens in a bar where Bailey gets a nagging thought out of her mind. She brings up what Charlie (Josh Hamilton) had told her — that Owen's actions were based on his belief that her family had killed her mother. It's a roundabout way of asking Quinn if she knows if the Campanos were behind the death that started this entire journey, though Quinn is understanding about it, especially given she's distanced herself from her family over far worse. She doesn't know anything Bailey would want to hear, but she does give her some wisdom, telling her to reflect on how far she wants to go for the truth, given that it won't ultimately change things, and the cost may be dire.

Greer, known for everything from 13 Going on 30 to Ant-Man and Jurassic World, is one of the biggest new weapons Season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me has in its arsenal, alongside Sleepless in Seattle star Rita Wilson. Her turn in the twisty drama is her second outing on Apple TV in the past year after taking on a recurring role in Owen Wilson's sleeper hit golf comedy Stick. Together with Wilson, Garner, Rice, Coster-Waldau, Aguilera, and Hamilton, she's part of a starry mix of new and returning stars, also including Nick Hargrove, Michael Galante, John Noble, Michael Hyatt, and Luke Kirby. Also joining the series in its second run is the new co-showrunner, Aaron Zelman, who shared duties with series co-creator Josh Singer.

'The Last Thing He Told Me' Season 2 Takes a Big Swing

Compared to Season 1, which was directly based on Laura Dave's #1 New York Times Best Selling smash hit of the same name, Season 2 of The Last Thing He Told Me featured more direct and continuous involvement with the author and series co-creator. Dave worked "in parallel" with the writers, as she only had 100 pages from the follow-up novel, The First Time I Saw Him, when it was time to work on the new episodes. The goal was to make two stories that felt different, but still complemented each other, a choice that paid off in the eyes of Collider's Tania Hussain. In her 8/10 review, she hailed Season 2 for being "a lot more confident in taking risks, emphasizing the rarity of a follow-up that doesn’t just continue the story but energetically improves the entire show to date."

Speaking in an interview with Hussain, Coster-Waldau highlighted just how much uncertainty there is for the family with four episodes remaining. Grady's death drives home just how serious the threat they're facing is and how woefully unprepared they are now to find a way out of danger. They need to keep pursuing more leads and, more importantly, working as a team if they want any hope of getting the answers they need that can guarantee them a somewhat happy ending.

"Well, he doesn't know the whole story. That's the thing. Both [Owen] and Grady had a very good idea of what they needed to do, but then it turned out that there were bigger forces at play. And of course, with Grady, when he finds him dead, all bets are off, and now you realize this imagined threat is very, very real, like, 'What the hell are we going to do?'"

The Last Thing He Told Me Season 2, Episode 5, premieres on Apple TV on March 20. Check out our exclusive sneak peek in the player above.
