As one of the largest media franchises in the world, Star Wars is known for lots of things, from how it redefined sci-fi with its lived-in universe feel to its staple storytelling and worldbuilding that continue to resonate with viewers nearly 50 years after its release. From Jedi to Sith to bounty hunters to rebels to Stormtroopers, each group of characters is so iconic for many reasons. However, one of the most iconic things about the Jedi and the Sith is their lightsabers.
These glowing swords of pure energy are the symbol of Force-users, showcasing their honor, alliance, and power. However, as the mythos expanded and the galaxy got bigger, more and more lightsaber colors have been revealed, and this level of customization isn't just for show; it also has meaning. That is why this list will rank every lightsaber color by how powerful they are based on the strength of the Jedi and Sith who possess them. Note that Cyan and other specific colors will not be featured, only canon colors in the movies or TV shows.
8 Orange
Image via LucasfilmInitially, there were only three colors of lightsaber: blue, green, and red. As the franchise continued, more and more colors began reflecting new allegiances. One of the most recent colors to be fully introduced in Canon Star Wars is orange, with Baylan Skoll (Ray Stevenson) and Shin Hati (Ivanna Sakhno) both wielding them in the Star Wars: Ahsoka TV show. There are many non-Canon Jedi, specifically from the High Republic, who had orange sabers, but as this list only includes canon characters, there are far fewer than expected.
Technically, Cal Kestis (Cameron Monaghan) from Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, one of the greatest Star Wars video games ever, can wield an orange lightsaber through customization. However, he canonically uses a blue lightsaber, leaving only the two fallen Jedi from Star Wars: Ashoka. It is hard to put this color any higher with only two borderline Sith users, especially since fans haven't seen all they can offer. With a lack of variety, orange is the weakest lightsaber color out of the bunch.
7 White
Image via LucasfilmOrange is a rare color, but there are a lot of lightsaber colors with few canon wielders, and another one is white, one of the most aesthetically pleasing lightsaber colors. There are a few High Republic Jedi who had white sabers, but the most iconic is easily Ahsoka (Rosario Dawson) from her live-action show. Every color has some sort of significance, and for a white blade to be created, the wielder must purify a corrupted, bleeding red kyber crystal, which Ahsoka did with the crystal of the Sixth Brother.
Badass look aside, the white lightsaber color is only prominently wielded by Ahsoka, and with only one Force-user in possession of it, white had to be low on this list. However, that shouldn't take anything away from Ahsoka, who has proven to be one of the strongest characters in modern-day Star Wars, even being a prominent character across multiple properties. Maybe as more shows and movies come out, there will be more Force users with white lightsabers, but for now, it comfortably sits near the bottom.
6 Purple
Image via 20th Century StudiosThis may be one of the most controversial and unpopular placements, especially considering Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) is a fan-favorite, but purple is near the end of this list. Before every color of lightsaber had some sort of meaning, Jackson came out to George Lucas and asked if his lightsaber could be purple because it would be cool, which the latter agreed to. Many fans claim that a purple lightsaber represents a unique balance between blue, green, and red, with a distinct bond with the light and dark side. This may be false, but it is at least an interesting head canon.
Mace Windu is one of the most powerful Jedi in Star Wars, capable of going toe-to-toe with Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid), notoriously known as the strongest Sith of all time. However, no matter how strong he is, as the only canon character with a purple lightsaber, he cannot be any higher than this. If anything, fans should take this as a sign of his strength, as this single Jedi is stronger than multiple fallen Jedi and white saber wielders put together.

REVEAL MY ALIGNMENT →
Your Alignment Has Been Determined Your Place in the Force
The scores below reveal how the Force sees you. Your highest number is your true alignment. Read on to understand what that means — and what it will cost you.
🔵 Jedi Master
🟡 Padawan
🔴 Sith Lord
⚫ Inquisitor
⚪ Grey Jedi
Disciplined, compassionate, and deeply attuned to the living Force, you have walked the path long enough to understand its demands — and accept them. You lead not through authority alone, but through example. You have felt the pull of the dark side and chosen otherwise, every time. That is not certainty. That is courage.
You are earnest, powerful, and brimming with potential — and you know it, which is both your greatest asset and your most dangerous flaw. You act before you think, trust your gut over your training, and sometimes confuse impatience for bravery. The Masters see something in you, though. The question isn't whether you have what it takes — it's whether you'll be patient enough to find out.
You are not simply dangerous — you are certain, and that is worse. You have decided what the galaxy needs, and you have decided you are the one to deliver it. Your power is genuine and formidable, earned through sacrifice that would have broken lesser beings. But examine your victories carefully. Every Sith believed their cause was righteous. The dark side's cruelest trick is that it agrees with you.
You were forged in fire and reshaped by those who found you at your lowest. You serve, because service gave you structure when you had none. Your allegiance is not to an ideology — it is to survival and to the master who gave you purpose. But there is something buried beneath the conditioning. The Jedi you hunt? You recognize them. Because you remember what it felt like before the choice was taken from you.
You have looked at the Jedi Code and the Sith Code and found both of them incomplete. You walk the line not out of indecision but out of conviction — you genuinely believe both extremes miss something essential. The Jedi don't fully trust you. The Sith think you're wasting your potential. They're both partially right. But so are you.
↻ RETAKE THE QUIZ
5 Yellow
Image via LucasfilmAs this list goes on, more and more colors will have multiple users, but as for yellow, only a handful of major characters ever used it. There are a lot of non-canon reasons for yellow lightsabers, including that people believe they are for scholars and protectors of knowledge. Whether that was true or not doesn't matter, because for a while, only the Jedi Temple Guards had them, as seen in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. However, that has started to change, with two prominent characters now wielding yellow lightsabers.
Rey (Daisy Ridley) is by far the most popular and strongest character in Star Wars with a yellow lightsaber, and after Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker, she is one of the most powerful Jedi. She boasted this new color at the very end of the movie, officially forging her new path. Fans can debate endlessly if Rey or Mace Windu is stronger, but yellow ranked higher because Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) is the newest wielder of this color. With two powerful Force users possessing yellow lightsabers, this color has a modern appreciation that makes it powerful.
4 The Darksaber
Image via LucasfilmAll the lightsabers on this list are specific colors that almost anyone can wield. However, there is one specific saber where only one exists: the Darksaber. This legendary blade is a symbol of leadership in Mandalore, and whoever wields it becomes the rightful leader of the planet. It has led to countless wars and battles for power, with many characters possessing it and then losing it, including some fan-favorites such as Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar/ Natasha Liu Bordizzo), and Darth Maul (Sam Witwer).
Almost all the known canon wielders of the Darksaber are non-Force users, but that doesn't mean they aren't powerful. This anomaly of a blade is more unique and rare than any other, and because there are a lot of characters who have wielded it, it ranks higher than expected. However, the first Jedi who wielded it must have been strong, and Darth Maul is an iconic character known for his strength. Putting it all together, the Darksaber is one of the strongest lightsabers, and fans can't wait to see what The Mandalorian does with it next.
3 Blue
Now that a lot of the random colors with only a handful of users are out of the way, this list gets to the big three, which most of the Force users in Star Wars use, starting with blue, arguably the most iconic color. Blue is the most common lightsaber color in the Star Wars universe, with some of the most iconic characters, such as Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), wielding it, to rather lesser-known Jedi, including Elzar Mann.
Because most Jedi use blue, it is also diluted with many weak or normal Jedi, making the average unpredictable and highly varied. However, even if thousands of unnamed Jedi wield blue sabers, fans also know that some legends possess them. From Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness/ Ewan McGregor) to Plo Koon, many legendary Jedi Masters, Knights, and warriors significantly boost this power ranking, making it one of the strongest lightsaber colors.
2 Green
Image via LucasfilmThere are many lightsaber colors, and most of them are used by the Jedi or Force users tapping into the light side, meaning that the strongest are very spread out. But even among that spread, one color sticks out as having the strongest users: green. There aren't many reasons for color in the actual canon, but some associate the green lightsaber with wisdom and a stronger connection to the Force. While that may not be true, some of the wisest and most powerful Jedi wield a green saber.
Starting with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the main character of the Star Wars franchise and its best movies, green has the definitive Jedi, who many also believe is the strongest. If that wasn't enough, then Master Yoda (Frank Oz) should do the trick, another legendary Jedi who is probably the second strongest after Luke. Even putting the two strongest Jedi aside, countless Jedi Masters and other powerful characters have wielded green lightsabers. The mightiest of the Jedi boasts a green saber, and that is more than enough information to put it at number two.
1 Red
Image via LucasfilmAs previously mentioned, the Jedi have around five colors to choose from, six if fans include being a fallen Jedi with orange. However, the Sith only have one color to choose from: red, but that is exactly why they are number one on this list. More variety in the colors of lightsabers for the Sith would be interesting, but that ominous red glow is too iconic to take away from these villains. From Darth Vader (James Earl Jones/ David Prowse) to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), there are more than enough Siths to have the top spot covered.
Technically, there are two types of lightsabers for the Sith: red and an unstable red lightsaber. Despite being different types of lightsabers, they are the same color, which is why this entry contains both of them, making it even more obvious that red is the strongest color. If fans were to pit all the Sith against all the Jedi, it would be a close fight, but with the Jedi broken up into groups, the sheer number of red lightsaber wielders and their dedication to strength is far greater than any other color. The Sith are all about power, knowledge, and strength, amassing an impressive roster of prowess that makes the red lightsaber the most powerful.
