Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Agatha All AlongA new MCU theory suggests that there might have been a way for Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) to save her son in Agatha All Along (just not alone). As seen in the finale of Agatha All Along, the titular witch's role in the creation of the Witches' Road is revealed, as well as what truly happened to her son, Nicholas Scratch. To that end, a key reveal from Agatha herself seemingly opens up the potential that she could have kept her son alive had she chosen a different path.
As seen in Agatha All Along episode 9, it's revealed that Rio Vidal aka Lady Death (Aubrey Plaza) gave Agatha more time with her newborn son who was apparently meant to die in childbirth. To that end, the witch was given around six years with Nicholas before he got sick, and Lady Death finally came to claim the boy and lead him to the other side. However, a new Agatha All Along theory suggests Agatha could have had her son for much longer had she operated differently in the new MCU show.
Agatha Is An Incredibly Powerful Witch In The MCU
But Even She Has Her Limits
Without a doubt, Agatha Harkness is a very powerful witch in the MCU. While she might not be as powerful as the fabled Scarlet Witch aka Wanda Maximoff, Agatha has existed for centuries, stealing other witches' power for her own gain throughout the ages. Likewise, Agatha All Along episode 9 confirms how she lured witches before ultimately betraying them, using the Ballad of the Witches' Road song she created with her son, convincing covens that the Road was real, and then stealing their power after goading them into attacking her with their magicks.

To that end, Agatha also confirms in Agatha All Along episode 9 all that she can do with her magical powers to Nicholas in the years before his death. According to Harkness herself, Agatha has the power to fire magical blasts of purple energy from her hands, and she can cast various illusions. She can also control weak minds, and manipulate objects using her will with a form of magical telekinesis (and can obviously absorb power from other witches). However, Agatha also tells her son all that she is unable to do, despite being such a powerful witch in the MCU.
Agatha Admitted Her Flaws To Her Son, Nicholas Scratch
She Can't Heal, Protect, or Divine
In Agatha All Along episode 9, Agatha also admits to her flaws and all that she can't do for her son. Likewise, the specific wording feels very important: "I cannot heal you. I cannot protect you from what's coming. And I cannot divine when she will return." While Agatha is of course referencing and fearing the inevitable moment when Nicholas dies and Rio aka Lady Death returns to claim his soul, it can't be a coincidence that each ability she can't do something one of her fellow coven members excelled at in the present-day events of Agatha All Along.
Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) was a gifted potion witch and was an expert at healing magic. Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn) was a protection witch. Lilia Calderu (Patti Lupone) and her primary area of expertise was divination with the ability to look into the future. Each of the coven member's respective skill sets was a power Agatha herself did not possess. As such, one has to wonder how Agatha's past and Nicholas Scratch's fate might have been different had she actually been part of a coven in the MCU.
MCU Theory: Joining A Coven Could Have Saved Agatha's Son
Was Nicky's Death The Cost of Being A Coven-Less Witch?
Rather than constantly betraying witches and choosing to be isolated, it stands to reason that Agatha could have relied on other witches and their abilities to keep her son alive. To that end, perhaps losing Nicholas so young was the inherent cost of Agatha Harkness being a coven-less witch. It certainly puts her time with Nicholas in an even more tragic light, assuming she could have indeed saved him and kept him alive for longer in her MCU past.
