Sense8 is a TV masterpiece by the creators of The Matrix, The Wachowskis, and even though it only lasted two seasons, it still deserves a watch. The Matrix may be a generation-defining movie, but Sense8 is a rare sci-fi TV show that is better than any blockbuster. The series was canceled too soon, leaving its future uncertain. However, a fan campaign resulted in a feature-length episode providing a proper ending for Sense8.

The show's passionate following has only grown over time, resulting in Sense8 getting cult status, with many viewers considering it one of the greatest sci-fi TV shows of the past 20 years. Despite first airing in 2015, Sense8 often feels ahead of its time today, and with relatively short seasons, it is easy to binge over a weekend.

What Is Sense8 About?

The sensates and friends celebrating a birthday

Sense8 follows eight people from different areas of the world, who discover that they have a psychic connection. The "sensates" are able to see the world through each other's eyes and share their skills. This becomes essential to their survival when they find that the group is being hunted down. The sci-fi genre can feel cold at times, and this is why Sense8 stands out.

At its core, Sense8 is a story about human connection and the value of community. While many sci-fi works focus on battles and dystopian situations, Sense8 shows the power of pooling resources to make groups stronger. Each of the sensates is dealing with a different situation in their life, but the connection gives them different perspectives and support through anything.

Sense8 Has Only Gotten Better With Time

When sci-fi relies solely on technology and visual effects, a show can grow dated very quickly. However, Sense8's character-focused storyline and choreography keep it feeling current. The concept would still be exciting today, and Sense8 has some of the best action scenes in any TV series, especially when characters with different skills morph into each other during fights and chases.

Sense8 has an extremely diverse cast, which features prominent LGBT+ representation without any of these characters feeling tokenized. The characters' experiences inform their arcs and decisions, and a scene in which they all face their fears written on a wall is especially impactful. The show is a perfect illustration of why diversity is a positive thing, and its message is timeless.

Sense8 Was Canceled Too Soon

Not all sci-fi TV shows have satisfying endings, but Sense8's feature-length episode that was released in 2018 wrapped the main story up well. However, it still left many questions unanswered, with characters like Capheus and Lito starting new journeys that became sidelined. The final episode had a lot of detail to include, so it is understandable that the lower-stakes situations were set aside, but there was room for more.

Sense8's ending left other sensates existing in the world, and because the show still feels current, there are plenty of opportunities to reboot it. Another Sense8 series could focus on the cluster we already know, follow a different cluster shown in the initial two series, or bring the timeline into the present day with a new cluster altogether.
